Excited to announce I'm starting the Kids Popcorn Podcast, where interesting people talk about movies they watched as kids, and kids movies they find interesting as adults. The first season will launch soon, and I think you'll love these conversations. Subscription links are on popcorn.29sunset.com!

Finished reading "The Tainted Cup" by Robert Jackson Bennett. I grade it a B-/B mainly because it's interesting world-building, but a poor murder mystery since it's pretty much impossible to solve the case from the text alone before the detective explains it. That said... 1/4

Once a year you have to read André Gorz' insightful takedown of car dependancy and sit for a second with the knowledge that it was written in 1973.

I genuinely want to know how to be the go-to person an NYT journalist calls when they want Regular Person quotes. I'll give 'em some good uncut shit.
Incredible lol

Gonna make this a major part of my personality in 2026.
The thing I am a crank about that never really comes up in regular life is that I think playoff statistics should count in athletes' canonical totals. Roberto Clemente had 3,034 MLB hits. Henry Aaron had 761 HR. Nolan Ryan had 5,767 Ks. Those games count!

Basically, my Never list is just a list of the states where I can't see myself feeling fulfilled being in any part of it beyond a visit. All my Reluctantly states have spots I can imagine things would work out!
I am apparently far more confident in my adaptability than others.

Unfortunately, no one's figured out how to actually make this work for anyone except the tiny slice of people who want to buy individual articles.

I like thinking about movies this way, too. It's the impulse that makes me think "Gravity" is one of the greatest movies of the past few decades.
I always hate the "best picture of the year" lists because I always think best picture should be about what best used the cinematic medium, which isn't always the same as the movie I enjoyed the most. I loved Father Mother Sister Brother and that wasn't exactly revolutionary for the medium.

I hate these charts so much because they imply chatgpt is comparable to the internet or phones

You could create the same graphic for full screen pop-up advertising on websites and make them look like ultra-rapid technology adoption when really they were just baked unavoidably into the internet
In 2025, AI became pervasive in American life and the economy, with ChatGPT surging in adoption much faster than any other major technology in memory. @nytopinion.nytimes.com

“There’s this push to specialize earlier and earlier,” said Meredith Whitley, a professor at Adelphi University who studies youth sports. “But at what cost? For those young people, you’re seeing burnout happen earlier because of injuries, overuse and mental fatigue.”

Family went out to Benihana in Burlingame circa 2005 and waited for our seats alongside former 49ers/Raiders/Cornhuskers running back Roger Craig. He was in a full tracksuit (purple and teal, per my recollection). 99% sure he knew we recognized him, even though we didn't say anything.
Right folks. Feeling rather down at the moment so bringing back an oldie

This is the result of "posting on text-based platforms is just dicking around" and that's perfectly good and ok.
Bluesky is the new place to go for high-level political discussions because half of the pundits, for lack of a better word, have credentials like "Guy who plays in a Portland post-punk band". "Professional video editor in San Diego". "Commodities trader in Nova Scotia". "Person named Sharon"

Jon Stewart apparently did something bad...
So long as we're doing nostalgia tours for political commentators, it's probably worth taking a clear-eyed look at what Jon Stewart actually DID as host of The Daily Show. (Wrote this in 2022)
Jon Stewart made Democrats feel good. That's not a compliment

The past few years, I've been figuring out how to keep writing regularly for pleasure while keeping my passion for work, spending time with family, and friends, and pursuing other projects (podcast, music). So I have a lot less output, and most of it is in classic short blog format.

Transit's main competition is cars. If you raise fares from $2.50 to $3, you're still way more affordable than driving. But if you cut the bus from every 15 to every 20, you're screwed because cars have infinity frequency and 24 hr service span.
I hate that we’re having to think in these terms, but the evidence seems to be bearing out that steep fare hikes are less damaging to ridership than service cuts.
2025 was brutal for US transit. Agencies faced budget deficits, flat ridership, and open hostility from the White House.

I wrote a series of stories outlining ways to help transit endure.

Lesson #1: Whatever you do, don’t cut service. Riders will leave – permanently.
