Really enjoyed this interview with Theda Skocpol, one of the founders of the American Political Development research I do. Here she talks about being interdisciplinary and the challenges of keeping the big picture in view while also drilling down on nuance and details. Whole thing was a great read.

Study after study shows campaign ads barely move the needle. So where does money’s real power come from? I ranked the five ways money corrupts politics—from least to most corrosive. What I’ve learned from 15 years of tracking political money:
Money Doesn't Buy Elections. It Does Something Worse.
Campaign ads barely move the needle. The real influence is hiding in plain sight.

not gonna lie, he seemed to rush through his set list and had no banter or eye contact with the audience, but something about his presence gave me the sense that he was glad to be alive and to be able to play music

How quickly we forget the BS excuses Republicans make up for military invasions. Does anyone remember weapons of mass destruction in Iraq?!?!

It’s almost always about oil. Another GOP president wants to use U.S. soldiers as pawns for big oil in his sick pursuit for money & power.

The United States appears ready for war with Venezuela, a prospect that Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro this weekend attributed to America’s desire to control the country’s vast oil reserves.

feels especially poignant this #Thanksgiving in the U.S.
They line up perfectly.
everyone's talking about how bright and charming zohran must be, which is true, but then you remember the spider-brained cryptkeepers trump's surrounded himself with since '15 and realize a single smile from mamdani must have hit like barbecue spare ribs down the gullet of a 12th century peasant.

agreed. @gordonhodsonphd.bsky.social and I have a paper under review that examines predictors of (a) belief in the existence of systemic racial inequality and (b) support for policies to remedy systemic racial inequality. we would love to read any references you could suggest on the distinction.

this whole thread.

in case anyone in the U.S. is still wondering...
knowing many directly affected, I personally asked some senior male colleagues to speak out about this during my earlier years as a professor, as i felt too vulnerable due to my stage of career.. it was shocking how much this was 'common knowledge' among women and how few male colleagues knew 😔

Postdoctoral Researcher Positions!

"We are all balls of reason and emotion. To render either automatically suspect, or to embrace either unconditionally, is to diminish part of our humanity and undermine our capacity for virtue. In fact, they are so linked together that it’s impossible to truly separate them in our minds or hearts."
The new right groans under the weight of its nostalgia for a nation that did not exist. And in writing about a false enemy that destroyed a fake past, Andrews and the many other architects of the right-wing gender wars are committing the very sins they attribute to the enemies they detest.

in response to your "it appears so" claim, I've heard from faculty (a) "The Chancellor went on record saying that UMass would not join the compact at the last [faculty] Senate meeting" and (b) "to protect academic freedom, stick to the truth and not misinformation to get people to turn out." 🙏🏻

whaaah? this is the first I've heard that.. any sources to which you can link, to verify this?
