"We are all balls of reason and emotion. To render either automatically suspect, or to embrace either unconditionally, is to diminish part of our humanity and undermine our capacity for virtue. In fact, they are so linked together that it’s impossible to truly separate them in our minds or hearts."
The new right groans under the weight of its nostalgia for a nation that did not exist. And in writing about a false enemy that destroyed a fake past, Andrews and the many other architects of the right-wing gender wars are committing the very sins they attribute to the enemies they detest.

"The controversy around [Mamdani's] words calls to mind a famous post from the old days of Twitter... It calls the site “the only place where well-articulated sentences get misinterpreted. You can say ‘I like pancakes’ and someone will say ‘So you hate waffles?’”"
The pro-Palestine group Within Our Lifetime has already decided that Zohran Mamdani has sold out the pro-Palestine cause... by condemning swastikas drawn on a Jewish day school in Brooklyn. forward.com/culture/7822...
Mamdani's first statement on antisemitism as mayor-elect got some weird pushback
After someone spraypainted a swastika on a yeshiva, Zohran Mamdani condemned antisemitism. Somehow, this generated conspiracy theories.

In the late 1800s, the nativists wanted many year waiting periods for immigrant citizens to even be eligible to vote. Same bigoted shit here.
🚨BREAKING: A civil rights organization sued the Trump administration Saturday over a new policy barring nonprofits from helping new U.S. citizens register to vote. The lawsuit calls the policy part of a “broader effort to ensure that new Americans cannot exert their democratic will on the nation.”

in response to your "it appears so" claim, I've heard from faculty (a) "The Chancellor went on record saying that UMass would not join the compact at the last [faculty] Senate meeting" and (b) "to protect academic freedom, stick to the truth and not misinformation to get people to turn out." 🙏🏻

whaaah? this is the first I've heard that.. any sources to which you can link, to verify this?

Trump and Republicans slashed over $1.1 trillion from Medicaid and cut healthcare tax credits that lower costs for millions of working families — all while delivering billions in tax breaks to insurance CEOs and Big Pharma. Join the fight to protect healthcare: economicsecurity.us/wp-content/u...
The USDA sent an email to grocery stores telling them they are prohibited from offering special discounts to customers affected by the SNAP funding lapse.
I'm aware of at least 2 stores that had offered struggling customers a discount, then withdrew it after receiving this email

Democratic Wins Media

In defiance of Vladimir Putin and Viktor Orban, protestors in Hungary stormed the streets to voice their opposition to authoritarianism. This is being almost entirely ignored by mainstream media. Let’s make it go viral.

After adding new data to our spreadsheet, our central estimate of turnout for the No Kings Day protests yesterday has risen to 5.5 million, with an upper bound of 8.7 www.gelliottmorris.com/p/second-no-...
Second "No Kings Day" protests likely the largest single-day political demonstration since 1970, with 4.2-7.6 million participants
Here are the initial results from our crowdsourced crowd-counting estimates

Good evening. We estimate that between 4.2 and 7.6 million people turned out for the No Kings Day demonstrations held around the country on Saturday. This makes Oct 18 very likely the biggest single-day U.S. protest event since 1970. www.gelliottmorris.com/p/second-no-...

This is what democracy looks like. #NoKings
After a week of ridiculous Republican smears and Trump claiming that “very few people are going to be there,” you just made history. #NoKings

Not only is this a great piece by @adambonica.bsky.social but my inner nerd loves that @dmsilverman.bsky.social refers to it as a "banger" 🤓
Apropos of nothing, resharing this banger from @adambonica.bsky.social about the anti-corruption pathway for Dems…

The Portland Frog army has now infiltrated Tulsa, OK and they’ve made an unlikely alliance with the T-Rex infantry and Sharks on Hoverboards mercenary forces.

This is truly terrifying.

On October 18th, millions of brave Americans will stand up and peacefully protest against the authoritarian disease metastasizing under Donald Trump.

While Vought traces the “leftwing revolution” back a hundred years, to the progressive era, there is no question that the election of Barack Obama was a radicalizing moment for him and many key thinkers on the radical Right - as were the multiracial protests in the summer of 2020.

“There is nothing an authoritarian fears more than peaceful, organized people power. Our organizing, rooted in our First Amendment constitutional rights, threatens this regime’s grip on power…Our answer is courage, solidarity, and nonviolent resistance. That’s our strength—and that’s how we’ll win.”

40 years ago, in high school, I stood on Michigan Ave holding hands with strangers for "Hands Across America" as a statement of national unity and to raise awareness of hunger faced by so many Americans. My heart is still with the people of Chicago, who are standing together for human dignity. 🙏❤️
Michigan Avenue right now.
