The government is following through on its pledge to rebalance funding to the places that need it most, writes @stuarthoddinott.bsky.social. Though, with limited funding, it has required the government to make tough decisions about who loses

HM Treasury have confirmed the review of the 'discount rate' used in the Green Book.

This is the rate used in business cases to discount future values in the calculation of benefit cost ratios. Is usually 3.5% now. The higher the rate, the lower the value of the future.

Indeed. Not a rational allocation of resources if the goal is maximising health. Never the bride. That's not dismissing off wider work/intentions on prevention (of which much), but if want to make a real difference, need to shift resources as well as rhetoric.

The child poverty strategy represents a concrete shift to prevention, but as always, the devil is in the detail.

@sophiemetcalfe.bsky.social and I go into that detail in our new comment:

- On coordinating multiple departments
- Ensuring local partners have the right support
- Monitoring progress
Three things the government needs to do to make the child poverty strategy work | Institute for Government
The child poverty strategy is a concrete shift towards prevention but ministers must take action to implement it effectively.

I've got to say, I'm not sure why this has become such a big media story. I might be wrong but my current view is that it's overblown. Flu arrived early, which is why it's breaking 'time of year' records, but it's only in the medium threshold and could peak lower than last year, let alone 2022-23.

Yes, I wouldn't be good company. Hope all well with you!

Richard Hughes of #OBR was/is great. Understands the critical two-way connection between #helath and the #economy. And how dependent they are, and health is so much more than the NHS. Will be missed in that role, hope to see in others soon.
