But the point (there is a point) is, people fetishise the idea over the hard work of plotting and character development and research and internal consistency and just writing the fucker, because the Idea is the sparkly magic bit.

And this is what makes them put value in the AI prompt.

I am writing a book on this exact subject and have given TED talks and won major awards for my archaeological research, which also appeared on the front cover of National Geographic. But do go on!

got asked, by a very nice person, 'why don't you use chatGPT in your writing' and their argument was that it's just like using google to research: a modern tech that will enhance my work. all the obvious issues aside, I don't want to be modern. I want to be artisanal.

Research can be hard work - especially when the artifacts you're writing about are behind safes, alarm systems, and guards.

That's why I'm so thankful for heroes like @saudax7.bsky.social, who kindly provided a little rest and relaxation during my trip to the local museum.

Had to escaped all the noise & distractions of Boston to get to a remote writing retreat for some solitary focused research time before my sabbatical is up. Wish me luck...

I lament all the research and writing I never got to do because I was too busy fighting sex pests and institutionalized misogyny

I got absolutely zero writing done today, but I did a lot of research and work on THE DEVOURING's cover, so I call that a successful use of the evening.

1. Many reporters don't understand numbers either. 2. I t is harder to research than just writing up what is given to you and chatGPT can't do it or 3. They are obfuscating.

I've started research on historic (preWW2) women who worked on volcanology/magmatic rocks. This includes anyone who was traveling to and writing about/observing/drawing/engaging with the landscape in myriad ways.

I'm building a list for further investigation. Will share soon! Any tip offs welcome!

I think for higher level work, in high school or college, there is an obvious benefit to writing a long research paper on a computer. But I wonder if we've lost some fundamental building block skills leading up to that because we don't write as much by hand in elementary and middle school.

Also on the * like it's Frodo right??? Just like, after the fact, writing the book? so like that MFer did his research and was like HOLY SHIT THAT'S WHAT THAT WAS?????

Why am I writing lectures on the day? Because a whole MA course was dumped on me / without a syllabus a week before teaching started, on top of 3 other modules this semester. Why do they think I’m under hours? Because everyone’s research hours were confiscated and hours to prepare classes were cut.

What some might say, and I saw someone pointing to research on this this morning, is that perhaps we could "fine tune" AI on the works of good human writers. Do you see why that does not impress me? I don't need a digital dj to remix prose styles. That's not what writing is for.

NY Times Runs Defense For Social Media Bans, Buries Evidence They Don’t Work Until Paragraph 14
Imagine you're writing an article about a popular policy trend. The trend is expensive to implement, disruptive to normal operations, and—here's the key part—there's substantial research showing it doesn't actually work and can cause other significant problems. How would you structure that article? One approach: Lead with the evidence. "Despite growing enthusiasm for , studies consistently find it doesn't accomplish its stated goals." Put that in paragraph one, maybe paragraph two or three with some lead-up if you're feeling generous.

Sort of. I wrote it, based off of extensive research and writing from my peer who was laid off before they could publish something public-facing. I stand by it, however!
