#weathervanes
Nova Scotia has competing animal weathervanes: Shubenacadie Sam and Lucy the Lobster.

I should also mention our third groundhog in Montreal (Fred la Marmotte) also concurs: early spring.

Not that niche. Every post I see about him is a complaint with an undercurrent of "never liked the gobby bastard."

And I'm sure for some that's true but a lot of weathervanes out there too. Personally if players behave like kids, I've no prob with a ref talking to them like they are.

You like these easy stories because they take the responsibility of fixing the mess we made off your shoulders.

Corporations and governments are feckless weathervanes. Ours pursue evil because that's what sells with their audience. The problem, still, is the white appetite for cruelty.

Kayne and #MorningJoe Scarborough have a lot in common actually. On top of being windvanes, weathercocks, weathervanes... they are united at the wallet with felon Trump.
January 29, 2026 at 8:11 PM
how do you parse the difference between why yes Virginia there ARE plenty of venal, corrupt, and flat out abusive and awful Democrats who are cynical weathervanes at *best* and sure there are still clubby friendships across the aisle, even now, bc class and proximity and power, all that yep;

Weathervanes all of them.

The 'bottom-dwellers', the 'weathervanes in media' will always feel 'the wind of change'. Their bread is buttered by silk-suited billionaire executives at 'The Top of the Rock, 30 Rock' who pay them $400K per/week to end up on the side of profits.

People stupid enough to vote for Trump
don't have worthwhile opinions.

About anything.

They have brain worms.

That's all they have.

Today they whine.

Tomorrow they'll cheer.

They are immoral weathervanes, subject
to ignorant whim, and should be rejected
as incapable of rational thought.

Ted Cruz is cut from the same political cloth as Gavin Newsom. They're political weathervanes.

Ted should be held responsible for his complicity and face the same trials as all the rest.

Too little too late.

If they're weathervanes, then it's good news in that they're a sign that the wind is pointing in our direction, but we know they won't stick with us the moment the media mood moves on

Better people explain how they got it wrong and that they've changed how they think about things - they are welcome
Bluesky idea: if people who didn't agree with you change their opinions so that they do agree with you, why not be happy that you are making progress - rather than complaining that they are "only just catching up"?

All the more reason to get gif of this rubber stamp politician. Weathervanes’ only fixed point is where they sit. ie THEMSELVES. Ask yourself if YOUR governmental representatives are working for YOU or for THEMSELVES. Do this often and VOTE!!

Rep. Tom Suozzi(D-NY), getting raked over the coals for his vote for more ICE funding, says in a campaign email that he didn’t understand what he was doing
January 26, 2026 at 8:35 PM
It's fully temporary, yes. They are weathervanes to a certain extent
January 26, 2026 at 8:20 PM
If focus groups and polls aren't telling these paper-thin weathervanes what to say, they have absolutely zero idea on what they should be doing, because conviction is a completely alien concept to them.
This guy sucks. Why should we ever vote for the democrats then?
January 26, 2026 at 7:38 PM
Too many of us seem far too fond of narratives of our powerlessness, maybe because powerlessness lets us off the hook... But we don't need everyone on board; we don't need one magic person in office; we need ourselves. To act. It's the wind, not the weathervanes.

The Zuiderkerk tower (1614) has a hand-forged iron weathervane that's been spinning for 410 years. Modern weathervanes rust through in 20. We made permanent things, then chose disposable.
January 26, 2026 at 8:03 AM
Dems are suddenly vowing to block ICE funding not because they grew a conscience - but because most politicians are weathervanes & the public pressure is working.

Mark my words - they won't maintain that opposition unless the pressure continues.

Not praise. More exactly that point that they're only moving because of the pressure, and an observation about how that is indicative of positive movement. Not that they are particularly praiseworthy for being weathervanes in that sense, but weathervanes do still show which way the wind's blowing.
January 25, 2026 at 9:56 AM
If the people in power insist on being weathervanes, then we must blow harder.
January 25, 2026 at 2:50 AM
All the weathervanes showing up today
January 25, 2026 at 2:28 AM
“Weathervanes are useless, they just point whichever way the wind is blowing”
January 25, 2026 at 12:43 AM
Good weathervanes.
January 24, 2026 at 9:26 PM
When weathervanes masquerading as political leaders say “we could lose our Republic,” it may be already gone, as the presence of masked thugs in streets seems to suggest.
January 24, 2026 at 12:39 PM
Jason Kanders kid used to call weathervanes "wind chickens" and I think that's an apt descriptor of these tools.
January 23, 2026 at 3:10 PM
I wonder why polls favor something that no democrat will try to influence with public statements or actions.

That's the kind of leadership we want - people who don't influence public opinion, just weathervanes with no principles. It's working just fucking great for the guys in charge, right?
