A pilgrimage I have not made for many years – Hutton’s Unconformity at Lochranza, Arran. The site where Hutton could finally prove the earth was unimaginably ancient. A place of deep history in every way.

Look at an unconformity and see a gap of three million or thirty million generations between molten rock that formed before any extant ocean and the sands of beach gone now for another fifteen million generations.

Hold the traces of your ancestor fifteen million generations removed in your hand.

About 33.4 million years ago, one of the major shifts in the Earth system occurred: the Eocene ended, and the Oligocene started. With that, sea level dropped globally, resulting in a massive truncation worldwide, an unconformity in the record. 🧪⚒️

Siccar Point is a touchstone in the evolution of geological thinking: the spot where a human mind first reeled at the depths of geologic time. Visiting it was profound, connecting across the centuries with James Hutton and John Playfair, who connected across the eons with the age of the Earth. ⚒️

Maybe they thrived for a million years and then all evidence of their presence was erased, along with about a billion years of geological evidence in the Great Unconformity.

All hands on the great unconformity in the Sandias, New Mexico. Pennsylvianian limestones on 1.4 billion years A type granites. @riceuniversity.bsky.social geology trip.

Context matters: Modeling thermochronologic data in geologic frameworks using the Great Unconformity as a case study
The critical importance of sample context and geologic information for interpreting geochronologic data has long been fundamental to the Earth science…

Grotzinger: Don't know what to make of material above unconformity on mound. Depositional clinoform, not sure whether aqueous or aeolian.

I think of this song every time I hike on Sandia Ridge (Albuquerque). The top of the mountain is a set of limestone bands full of ocean fossils, on top of the uplifted granite of the Rio Grande rift. Great Unconformity!

2/2 Beautiful earth which we got zas PURE UNEARNED GIFT We NEED it; it doesn't need us. Despite the hubris about who & what we (think) we are & know; ias Aeschylus said, we are "creatures of a day". Take the Great Unconformity : A ¼ OF THE EARTH'S HISTORY GONE; but we STILL think we know it all.

The Great Unconformity is a visible temporal gap of a billion years in the Earth's strata. It's one of the biggest mysteries in geology: how does a billion years just go missing? 🧪

Similar to the sense of being at the Great Unconformity, with rocks from 500 mya sitting on rocks 1 billion years old, or 1.1, even 1.3. Just inconceivable swaths of time wiped away, or that you can just hop back to by moving your finger an inch lower.

This, my friends, is a textbook unconformity. (Noticed by Phil Stooke.) Curiosity sol 620. http://www.midnightplanets.com/web/MSL/image/00620/0620MR0026030240401513E01_DXXX.html http://t.co/PGiYDxl8CM

Kids can be incredibly cruel to each other re unconformity - I'm genuinely feeling like suggesting something else.

I realise this is trivial to what parents of actual trans kids are going through.

But on a personal level, I hate that she will have less freedom to be herself than I did in the 80s.

An unconformity of stratigraphers then seems appropriate for more than one reason.

Not being a historian, I would refer to it as an unconformity.

Angular unconformity of land survey grids, west Texas south of Brownfield. I have no idea what the story is on the tilted land survey grid to the southeast. Land in Texas has its own distinctive history. And look at those red soils...I was looking for dust, by the way. Sentinel 2 image.

It’s the latter 😀Unconformity is an actual geology term for when one layer lies above another with a break in between them.
