I think my thesis advisor’s lab has one of these in the pile of possibly-useable computers saved from the university tech dump and I have the absurd fantasy of nursing it back to health cuz old thinkpads are cool

The nice thing about Windows 11 is I have a stack of thinkpads here that are handmedowns. Debian Trixie loves them even if Microsoft doesn't.

bastel hier seit gestern schon wieder mit thinkpads rum, also mit windows, ubuntu, arch, live-usb-sticks, 'tlp', bios updates... das kann eigentlich nur bedeuten dass mein unterbewusstsein weiss dass einige dinge aktuell viel wichtiger wären als diese scheisse…

There are external graphics cards but some of them are expensive while other cards are not as expensive. And there are used ThinkPads available all day long at many stores and they’re almost always great for linux.

Before I went Mac in 2000 I used to build my own desk tops and buy laptops for home and activities.
Since I went Mac the amount of time spent on keeping things running is virtually zero.
I restart maybe 3 times a year.
When still employed ThinkPads and the like were excruciating to use.

My pops gave me his old laptop that he used to have for his audio and video recording for the church which means it's not an entirely worthless piece of garbage its got wondows 11 and actually about on par with the used thinkpads I was considering. Also a DVD player? Bonus!
