Interesting. Where do you go, out of interest? Duchening is one of those things, alongside hoshanot, that I imagine looks oddest to the outsider. My daughter’s bat mitzvah is on Shavuot, so I’ll get to see the reaction of our non-Jewish guests when I perform the ritual.

Just heard a gentile podcaster very confidently pronounce Shavuot "SHOO-voo-aht." She's also been guilty of stating that the Thames is the most storied river in the world, so it seems possible that she lives in a cave in the Cotswolds and has never met anyone outside her parish.

Shlomo was a survivor of the Farhud.

To understand why Shlomo’s story matters, you have to go back to June 1, 1941.

It is Shavuot in Baghdad.

The Jewish community is putting on their holiday clothes.

My grandmother and her grandfather were zionists and then his grandfather was a tailor for the czar and I just think it’s so interesting that 9 generations of loser cronies led to me and Jake eating ice cream in bed on Shavuot & reading an antizionist Haggadah.

This was the Farhud.

"At least 180 Jews were confirmed murdered—though many believe the number was much higher. Thousands were injured. Homes were looted. Synagogues were desecrated. Girls were gang-raped in front of their families. Infants were thrown into the Tigris River."

An October 7 in 1941.
