#independents
“I don’t think it did anything to assuage the concerns that they were pressured by the most powerful man in the country to change their broadcast,” Democratic Texas Senate candidate James Talarico said. “And that should be alarming to all of us, whether we’re Democrats, Independents or Republicans

Replace everyone in Congress with everyday Americans running as Independents.
Remove all party control & investigate Congress for watching our country burn!

Our REPRESENTATIVE DEMOCRACY is only for billionaires & FOREIGN interests?

The most American thing we can do is unite and fight back! ✊🏼

Swing voters and independents in the 21st century want a candidate who is passionate about what they talk about, let alone the base.

The party has given them Hillary Clinton, Joe Biden, and Kamala Harris in return. Adding Newsom to that would complete the superfecta of meh.
February 18, 2026 at 2:26 AM
Why haven’t people realized that for about 15 years, we’ve become so polarized a country, that the amount of swing voters and independents who care about policy are far less than the number of base voters who will stay at home for a candidate they can’t get behind? Right or wrong, it’s where we are.

The true question is, who will Independents support?

The Teal independents seemed to hurt them more than any other. Had they embraced climate change, local concerns and women, their position would be different, instead they went right, too far right. This was their moderate voters, the centre voter and they ignored them thinking they knew best. 1/2

And as for independents also exceptionally rare.

About 6 in 10 US adults say President Donald Trump has “gone too far” in sending federal immigration agents into American cities, according to a new AP-NORC poll that suggests political independents are increasingly uncomfortable with his tactics.

Down over 1000 in Monroe and close to 1000 in Upson. It is a good performance but needed more lower R turnout in those places. My guess is that Rs losing independents in this kind of race but not enough of them in overly rural counties.

I'm a hopeless optimist and see the Independents playing more of a role in our future. It will be a slow evolution, but they turned heaps of seats marginal in the last election and some of those polled as leaning towards PHONy may just be experiencing general disillusion and not leaning far-right.
February 18, 2026 at 1:42 AM
As someone pointed out 'not sure' was where Trump voters hid in 2016 but by the nature of how polls work that was skewed towards independents. This is 40% of *Republicans* saying this.
February 18, 2026 at 1:38 AM
Not just Rs. Look at the independents. Same same. Strong avoidance of swallowing the bitter people that their 'woke cousin' was right.
February 18, 2026 at 1:33 AM
I disagree. The reason others didn’t win in the past was bc they couldn’t appeal to Independents/Repubs on the fence, many that have Christian values. Talarico is a legit Christian that can appeal to southern Christian values. I say this as a non Christian Texan that grew up in a Christian family.

I like that pull quote and will check this out but this feels like the epitome of NY Times bs where the headline is “13 democratic voters” and in the article 3 identify as independents.
February 18, 2026 at 1:24 AM
This is wild.

The point is to run a candidate that has appeal both within and without the party base. Running in a multicandidate primary and winning with 30% while you’ve antagonized independents isn’t going to get Medicare for All passed.
February 18, 2026 at 1:13 AM
she needs to hold republicans because, if nationwide numbers hold in maine, she’s going to lose a lot of independents

The success is that fascism has controlled most of the USA media for quite some time. You're still playing find which ones to eliminate, when the answer is all of them.

Left to right, the medias are owned by fascism and pedophilia.

Independents who have proven trust are what you need.

And in a country where over 30% of voters consider themselves independents, any winning candidate will have be able to appeal to voters outside of the party as well.

Well, the only news here is that Republicans and some independents found out that Trump is racist and cruel. Democrats have known all along. #NeverVoteRepublican

The whole point of Community Independents is that they're independent and come from the grass roots of their community. And that they're NOT a party. But the disingenuous 'electoral reform laws' enacted to seriously undermine them, may force alternative options. www.communityindependentsproject.org

Dems lost more independents than leftists on their stupid anti left hostility! Because leftists policies are more popular than democrats.
February 18, 2026 at 12:48 AM
Let's also recall that Sen Amy Klobuchar ran in the primary & frankly, she couldn't pull it off. At least Harris was able to garner the democratic electorate, tho apparently not Independents... Other than AOC who might be too young, not seeing any other women tough enough. No E Warren's in the bunch
February 18, 2026 at 12:47 AM
I hope independents are paying attention.
Hey JD Vance, is this a violent criminal?
February 18, 2026 at 12:47 AM
Leftists vote dem as reliably as evangelicals vote republican. Maybe don't structure your entire campaign around trying to lose their votes!

Leftists got brought on in 2020, a win. Leftists were shunned in 2024, lost more independents than you did leftists. Pattern recognition anyone?
February 18, 2026 at 12:47 AM
I can't wait to see it all fracture - the Libs down the middle, from the Nats, perhaps a new centre- or far-left party, and of course, more Independents on the crossbench. Then we'll have a genuine democracy, free of the duopoly.
