the next younger version had a whole lot of frames and imagemaps and was VERY colorful.

I still used the marquee tag.

Some features I tested in this chapter include:
- More stylized UI.
- A dress up (dress down?) minigame with Owen.
- A short animated sex scene.
- Phone Texting UI between characters.
- Imagemaps with point-and-click mechanics.
- Character "health" bar that is impacted by your actions.

legitimately had the thought "do i really want to go back to imagemaps made in Adobe ImageReady". for those who don't know: it wasn't uncommon, at least in the spaces i was in back then, to make elaborate layouts in photoshop & use another adobe program to chop up the images to make into a website

For the love of god if you're going to sell an asset set stop using imagemaps it's so bad for when someone wants to go in and edit the work

I'm a big fan of when political maps of countries have html imagemaps applied to them, so that you can click anywhere on one of the divisions and go to its article.

It's surprisingly rare though.

Alas, I don't still have any visual record of my Geocities website from 1996 (tiled backgrounds, anyone?), and the earliest captures of my current domain are 2001... but here's some old navigation images from when imagemaps were kinda the hot thing, and a banner.

Here's the original line art for one of my website imagemaps in 2001-ish (The final version was colored in PaintShop Pro).

Please note the "Sign Book" part, as in: "Sign my guestbook" Because in my day you'd visit a page and leave a little note on their provided guestbook.

I created imagemaps by painstakingly cutting one image into multiple pieces and then reassembling it by handwriting html code in notepad(?) so that it looked like one image but it contained links to different pages that I had also handwritten the html for. I wrote tables within tables within tables.
How old are you in Internet years without telling us your age?
August 9, 2024 at 6:03 PM
1994 was pre-tables, as the screencaps make fairly clear. (TABLE came with Netscape 1.1 in earlyish 1995). Layout in 1994 was basically UL / LI with some creative use of images. Imagemaps for navigation.

Holy crap, same same.
I got my dinosaur of an agency to adopt css, way back when. They were perfectly happy to keep making (wheeze) imagemaps & tables.

Jesus fucking shit @pfrazee.com!

The mobile web interface on your non-standard piece of shit website that you had to REINVENT FROM THE GROUND UP instead of using standard code I'm forced to use because of the HORRIFYING COMPLETE LACK OF SECURITY MODEL in your app KEEPS FUCKING BREAKING THE UI!
