A few years ago, after reading about a festival in Kandivali that had branded itself Candy Valley, a few of us made up a whole series of pseudo-posh names for localities in the MMR.

The only one I can remember is Vashington,

Does #BomSky wanna play?
The perceived poshness of neighbourhoods and how they affect naming fascinates me.
Alyque Padamsee determinedly referring to Lower Parel as Upper Worli comes to mind. And the grand old man of advertising had an impact. In a way. UW isn't a formally named area, but you can find it on Google Maps!

Bought this from a pavement bookseller today. Cover price ₹250, but I got it for ₹150, with the assurance of ₹100 back if I return it.

St Thomas’s Cathedral for Christmas service. First time in an Anglican church — the denomination I was christened in — for 40-something years. Also the first time in that many years that I stepped into any church for something other than a wedding, christening or funeral, or as a traveller.

Share one sentence* from a book you read this year (any genre) that has made so strong an impression that you can quote it without having to check back in the book. If you like, tell us why. (Don’t forget to name the book and writer.)

*Could be two sentences. Or three. Or a phrase or a new word.

Likely the saddest story you’ll read today: What will it take to shatter the political indifference that is at the root of this decades long apathy toward tribal communities in Melghat?
