David PurdumJan 8, 2026, 07:00 AM ET Close Joined ESPN in 2014 Journalist covering gambling industry since 2008 Chris Andrews, a veteran Las Vegas oddsmaker with more than 40 years of bookmaking experience, scrolled through his NFL numbers over the weekend and noticed something unusual. Entering Week 18, he had seven teams with Super Bowl odds shorter than 10-1. "That's way more than most years," Andrews, the sportsbook director at the South Point casino, said.

Prediction markets platforms (in their current, unregulated state) are incentivized to encourage insider trading.

The sportsbooks alone are worth it. There is one that's part of a pool.

There’s a reason there are gambling regulators and established outlets like sportsbooks exist. They help keep guardrails in place so shady outlets don’t offer bets you can’t actually win doing shit exactly like this.

What gets me about using prediction markets as either predictive or even descriptive is the size of the market itself. Sportsbooks take billions of dollars in bets every year and build pretty efficient lines on games. The Kalshi market on if US take control of any part of Greenland has $650k in bets

...Anyway, that led me to consider Polymarket. Which will ridiculously not be considered gambling. (At least potentially) Even for "contracts" taken on sporting events.

But it looks like there's no useful appeal process to a regulatory body for shenanigans. (I've won two cases against sportsbooks.)
January 7, 2026 at 9:52 AM
BTW, I don't expect any sympathy at all for that loss. The spread of sportbetting in the US has been awful. I was in favor and clearly got it wrong. It's ruining lives, And ruining sports broadcasts. (And they didn't fix the banning/limiting problem that allows sportsbooks to refuse winners.)...

Used to love to place small bets (literally ranging from 50¢ to $2) on sports but holy shit can we please sequester the leagues, sports media, and sportsbooks from each other? Like ESPN should not be both the Southeastern Conference's broadcast partner AND have a sportsbook partner.

I'm a poker player, not a gambler. My goal isn't to make money off of sportsbooks; my goal is to manipulate weak minded people into giving me their money when they should have folded. Don't lump me in with those evil people who ruin millions of lives, I ruin very specific lives in person.

NFL, CFB Weekend Betting Recap: ‘Mixed Bag of Results’ for Books, Bettors
Ravens-Steelers provided a thrilling end to the regular-season battle between bookmakers and bettors. But much like the rest of the NFL Week 18 odds market, results were mixed. Multiple sportsbooks needed the Steelers on Sunday night and got them in wild fashion, as Pittsburgh won 26-24. However, Caesars Sports needed the Ravens. "The customers won big on the last game of the regular season, on the biggest game of the day," Caesars vice president of trading Craig Mucklow said.

Oddsmakers make Rams heavier favorites in wake of Seahawks win
Rams head coach Sean McVay said all week that his plan is to play the team’s starters against the Cardinals and that the result of Saturday’s Seahawks-49ers game was not going to factor into how he handled things on Sunday. Sportsbooks appeared to have some doubts that he’d follow through with that, however. The line for the game in Los Angeles had the Rams favored by -7.5 or -8.5 points for most of the week, but there’s been a significant change on Sunday.

"keep gambling legal but outlaw sportsbooks" should be the median position
January 3, 2026 at 7:16 PM
Parlays are high risk, high reward and are one of the most addictive types of sportsbooks. You have to get multiple consecutive bets correct to win.

Most of the gambling debt in sports gambling apps has to do with parlays

Simply put, parlays are the most predatory type of gambling

One of two things. 1) more money is being bet on the Seahawks and the sportsbooks need to give betters more reason to bet on the Niners by offering more points. 2) information that could affect the outcome is taken into account-injuries, weather, late breaking news…

the sweepstakes casinos and sportsbooks are pretty clearly legal imo. they're getting banned in more states, most notably california which is a giant market without legal sports betting, but since no one is flouting the bans i'd be stunned if anyone got in legal trouble
