Some… mainly in a rdr2 fan fic and in some literary rps at the moment but, community and found family is important to me so I hope to include that when my brain lets me write again #SpoonieAuthorChat

I agree. The hardest part is the marketing. And you're not alone in finding something and then having something happen to it. #SpoonieAuthorChat

I think the hardest part of being an indie author is the marketing. It's really difficult to figure out what will and will not work. And, when I finally, find something that holds some semblance of promise, something inevitably happens to it. (I swear I'm cursed).

Expect: Queer characters, joy & trauma, found family, healing from trauma or dealing with mental health, neurodivergent and disabled characters.

Other fun things: magic & gods, action or fighting scenes, and a mixture of evil villains and flawed people with gray morals.

The words "everyone's got a book in them" spring to mind.... I think storytelling is often overlooked as a craft, because it *looks* effortless, physically. #SpoonieAuthorChat
Spoonie Author Chat (for creatives who manage spoons), August 5, 2025: Why do you think indie authors sometimes face disrespect for self-publishing when other indie folks (filmmakers, artists, musicians) are often thought of as awesome?

#SpoonieAuthorChat more disabled characters in stories that aren't about the disability. It seems to be increasing in kids tv (though more from international offerings than in USian shows) and that's a start, but I'd love to see more incidental disability in general that goes beyond glasses

hellooooooooo #SpoonieAuthorChat I'm E (she/they), I write mostly fantasy, and I just got two shiny new diagnoses literally yesterday for Disability Pride Month Eve

so far I've published books about (a) an 83-year-old chosen one and (b) an immortal ghosthunter who doesn't look a day over 70

Because we don't spend ALL our time 'overcoming', though governments/cuts to health support seem to be giving us ever more to overcome at the moment. Disabled people are people & people do more than overcome. Writing should reflect this, or it's bad writing. Representation matters #SpoonieAuthorChat

Why is it important for disabled characters to just be a part of the story, or the protagonist of a story, without some “overcoming” trope?

No. If it’s an essay, you’re getting “I think [objectivity] is dumb” (Zebrowski, H. link).
wherein I link you to the podcast episode. If it’s fiction, I indent the first line of the paragraph.

I wrote an entire book, a humorous queer military romance, during the year where I had the worst panic attacks of my life. I didn’t know that my brain could help me through panic attacks by writing funny scenes. Brains are pretty marvellous actually. #SpoonieAuthorChat

Most of the time I do have trouble picking names and end up browsing baby name sites. 😅 But once I find one, it's usually a perfect fit and it sticks! Rarely do I end up changing names in later drafts.

On my phone & email them to myself to compile into doc when I'm able to sit at desk. I sometimes write structure in pencil/felt tip (easier to use in bed w/ minimal wrist pressure required). I like to write in 'analogue' as well as digital - they feel like different 'spaces' to me #SpoonieAuthorChat

#SpoonieAuthorChat Haven't consciously thought about it before.

Guess my best trick is to write a self-insert MC with my own issues. Since I'm not prone to looking in the mirror all misty-eyed and go "so ... INSPIRATIONAL!" I'm probably on the safe side with myself.

Because first I ask myself "How am I writing this character? Could this be construed as inspiration porn?" But also each character gets the same flaws, foibles and I use my own experience as a #SpoonieAuthor to help shape how I write characters and their concerns. #SpoonieAuthorChat

Every character gets the same treatment (flaws, personal history, complicated relationships with other characters, special interests), while focusing on plot. I do want to inspire people (with ALL my characters), but my main goal is always the same: telling a story. #SpoonieAuthorChat

Making a late lunch because Monday 😵‍💫 is also Benlysta hangover day. It's usually a low-energy day for me. Today's lunch is my go-to baked salmon with jasmine rice and broccoli, and all the soy sauce. What are you having for lunch?
