It’s definitely a tricky balance between being called to be like Jesus and thinking one is Jesus. And of course soteriology is wrapped up in there, along with women having been called too often to sacrifice themselves. But all Christians are called to lay down their lives for others.

This came up in a session the other day and it (dumbly) occurred to me, we've so de-contextualized that "moral arc of the universe" quote that, like, how many of us hold in mind that MLK Jr. was a theologian &pastor. That was a theological statement with a particular soteriology etc behind it.
Hi fellow white folks:
It's almost MLK Day.This year, could we PLEASE think & read up, before we click "repost" on cherry-picked, out-of-context, clipped Dr. King quotes?? Ya know, the ones that some of us always embarrassingly post every January, just to make ourselves feel warm & fuzzy??
Thanks!

Soteriology is complicated.

There's SO much wrong w/that DHS video from a theological perspective—going back to soteriology. When we made Jesus a passive scapegoat & victim to excuse people who intellectually assent to the "right" beliefs, we became Rome & made God Incarnate into a tool of Empire. 1/2

There has been some interest in the #theology of Ignacio #Ellacuría by theologians in the U.S.
Several books with analysis and interpretations have been published over the years.
Some examples 👇. Bibliography in alt-txt.

Do y’all understand that in We Fall Down Donnie McClurkin transmutes his guilt and shame about being a homosexual into the definitive statement of the uses of evangelical soteriology for Blacks in Crack Era America. Do you understand you will never reconcile masculinity that gloriously? Wow!

Not gonna be a popular opinion but chauvinistic views of soteriology are an excellent red flag for bigotry. Turns out there’s not really a faith exception to the pitfalls of imagining yourself to be unquestionably superior to others.

OMG I can't believe I missed her Spinoza phase. She said a few weeks ago, "I am a Solovievite, I follow a broadly Eastern Orthodox ontology (Dionysius, Maximus, Palamas) and a Roman Catholic ecclesiology and soteriology (Anselm, Bonaventure, Girard)". Fine. I'll try searching for old Spinoza tweets.

That’s fair. I don’t think the film spends nearly as much time on soteriology/apologetics as it does on calling attention to the narrative and social construction of religion, but I could be reading selectively or projecting.

I liked it, but it didn’t feel as polished or incisive as the other 2.

I definitely do. It's big argument is moving the theological locus of the devil from the doctrine of creation (the majority report in the tradition) to soteriology and redemption (a minority report Ziegler sees in Calvin and Barth). I find it quite compelling

I cannot speak for him but I suspect that if he was around right now he'd be pretty pissed off, as evidenced by the actions of his life and the two thousand years we've spent litigating the soteriology of his message and the ethical framework his predecessors developed in his absence

My most basic idea is “what’s the deal with the book of revelation anyway?” Which is the big question of the book. It’s got fun critiques of power and a neat soteriology as it tries to answer the question.

I am a theology graduate, I definitely wouldn't trust it to do and understand exegesis and soteriology.
December 16, 2025 at 7:29 PM
I obviously disagree with this. People confuse objective reconciliation (soteriology) with the ethical implications of the Gospel (ethics). In that confusion, the aforementioned critique implicitly assumes that being a good person leads one to heaven. This is not the case.
