It turns out that PhD candidate life is much scarier than life beforehand

Today, I got news an ambitious multi-year, multi-university center I am (a small) part of had been funded; I went for a swim and saw seven rays and a groper fish; I hung out with my PhD advisor over flat whites and discussed research with an by my own student.

Life is good, 10/10, would recommend.

Before COVID, Høeg had a blog where she discussed her life, career, and interest in sports medicine.

When the pandemic hit, she—like too many other doctors—leveraged her PhD in epidemiology (sports-focused) and MD to become a right-wing favorite “expert,” casting doubt on public health authorities.

two reasons to get a PhD: 1) respected gender-neutral honorific 2) the chance of this happening in real life greatly improved

But seriously, this is not just under-30s. I'm *48*, real wages have been largely stagnant my whole working life (I entered the labour market a few years late thanks to doing a PhD so missed most of the end of the long boom)...

“You know, I’m not unaccustomed to people being confidently wrong at me. I’m a woman with a PhD. I’ve been training for this my whole life.”

I finally cut a clip of what multiple people told me was their favorite joke from this set.

I spent the majority of my life working as a software engineer. But I never doubted once that my PhD in the humanities made me a better software engineer than I would otherwise have been.

Fantastic day for a lab hike!

From Spit Bridge to Manly Beach, featuring all stages of the lab life cycle: 1st year undergrad -> honours thesis student -> PhD scholar -> visiting international student -> old professor.

🏆 It's a double win for the Soldati Lab! Last Friday, our former PhD students @angieprrt.bsky.social and Jahn Nitschke each received an award for their doctoral work: the Laemmli Prize for Angélique and Best Thesis in Life Sciences for Jahn. So proud of both for these well-deserved honors! 🤩

She probably wasn't radicalized at all and society's just gotten crazy enough to where a normal history Phd might look around at people in their life and think "he goes Nazi".

Have decided to opt out of the public beating. In April, I gave up my whole (then) life to fight this I work on this stuff 24/7 and my salary (only 3 days so I can still do my PhD on FWS) is about £30k. I'm not really some high flying lawyer. Just a trans person. Trying. Hoping that's enough.

the thing I most wanted out of D&D was imagining I could be a person who was socially proficient

then I got into speech competittions + became a communication PhD in real life

When I do career panels, people often ask me what about my PhD was most valuable for becoming an award-winning* science journalist.

Sure, I have a PhD in science

But I have a bachelor's in Philosophy and I use it every day of my life.

*not big awards, but still, I'm not terrible at my job.
So our campus just announced the six undergraduate programs being put on the chopping block.

One of them is Philosophy.

Philosophy.

Can we be a university without offering a Philosophy major?

Because I’m so low energy, I had taken making coffee off the list of things I could do. Yesterday I introduced half a cup. I was more “productive” but when if came time to sleep many, many hours later — trouble.

I was mostly no coffee most of my life until my PhD.

Today I start a new journey. 🫶🏾
New country, new city, and a life after my PhD. ☺️

As someone with way more graduate degrees than any one person should have, I genuinely think working a service job should be mandatory. I learned more about life as a hotel maid and bartender than I did in an astrophysics PhD that's for sure.

That's so cool! Gordon Freeman is such a legend! Did you know he has a PhD in theoretical physics? And the Half-Life series is iconic! It's amazing you share an age with such a cool character! 😄
