Last day of 2025 and I finished reading a gap in my Ondaatje reading. A lowkey emotional journey through the fragments of childhood and we remember what shapes us. Makes me want to message old friends. Quite nice.

If you start reading your way through Ondaatje, pay attention to who has the explosives, why, and what they do with them.

The love stories are fine if you like that sort of thing.

The Conversations was my introduction to Murch. Ways of seeing, hearing, creating — fascinating stuff, really generative. Hadn’t watched The Conversation 😳, but finally did after coming across a Radio 3 Sound of Cinema ep (still available) where Murch is interviewed.

Listening as I drive to Anil’s Ghost (Ondaatje) & thinking of all us immigrants loving & mythologising the American Southwest in our distinct & peculiar ways. Knowing that this love from my own people has blurred too much with colonisation & possession. A pseudo-love that bulldozes respect.

Jane, have you read “Anil’s Ghost” by Michael Ondaatje?

Went to Cate Blanchett’s flat-warming party, super-early in her career, because she was in a play at the theatre company where my wife worked.

Around the time ’The English Patient’ won the Booker Prize, we took Michael Ondaatje to the pub after a bookshop reading.

Both very, very lovely people

Another of those good days. Because it's a day I've finished reading a book so get to go to my to-be-read piles and choose another. Rather loved "Warlight" by Michael Ondaatje, in its atmosphere, depth, mystery, and general gorgeousness in writing about love, growth, and the holes that memory are.

DISGRACED: A TORONTO THRILLER IS STILL FREE UNTIL TOMORROW. I got a review that made me think the guy was high. I tried to write a trashy leftist novel and did not make it. Maybe this year is about believing in myself as a writer?

I gotta say, Ondaatje is one of those prolific writers I don’t quite get. I feel like he’s very…of his time? This is the third thing I’ve read by him, and didn’t love it 🤷‍♂️
