Bad Gays: A Homosexual History by Huw Lemmey & Ben Miller
We all know and love Oscar Wilde and Harvey Milk, but the past is filled with queers whose sexualities and / or dastardly deeds have been conveniently discarded. Emperor Hadrian was a motherfucker, and maybe my favorite (favorite?) chapter.

It’s been a long, exhausting week, and now all I want to do is have a naked coffee with naked friends. If only I had more naked friends in the area!

I rarely read YA novels (and when I do, it’s usually for work), but this one was pretty banging. I’m looking forward to the TV series!

“The mind that can find little excitement in life is a dying one; the mind that cannot find something in the world that attracts it is dead, and the body housing it might as well be dead, for what are the uses of the five senses to a mind that takes no pleasure in them?”

"’We learn the classics for a reason…Because they are the best we have. The best of mankind.’

‘They are what, England's best? This is not England. This is not where English words shape the land. English doesn't hold us. Here, we hold it, and that means it cannot hold our best’."

Cold was the perfect book to read as the first snow falls. This mix of crime, mystery, and horror with elements of traditional Anishinaabe stories was unputdownable!

“‘When you ain't got somethin' it's a waste of time to try’n miss it is what I figure.’
‘Feels good to miss things.’
‘Oh yeah. Why would that be especially?’
‘Well, it makes you know you're livin'. That you touched something. That something touched you.’”

Happy fcf!

This hotel knows exactly what they’re doing placing a mirror there! I guess being in the gayborhood, they know their clientele 😂

Happy hump day!

There are two asses in “assassin”, so here’s a 3rd to complete the title. This was such a fun novel! I can’t wait for the event with the author and translator tomorrow!

"Capitalism is the ultimate cause of climate breakdown.”

Do your part and become a nudist: minimal laundry and no fast fashion.

Also, staying home and masturbating means minimizing consumption 😜

“Were writers who embodied and illuminated their times eventually condemned by the more enlightened future they themselves helped bring into being?”

Give Kiran Desai her 2nd Booker already! And if I have to wait another 19 years for her next book knowing it will be this spectacular, I will!

Happy long weekend!
I don’t think I can get enough of Norwegian autofiction. Also, Martin Aitken might be my favourite Norwegian-to-English translator (even though Tiina Nunnally is pretty awesome as well!)

When I read The God of Small Things at 18, I thought it was the perfect novel, and it changed the way I engaged with literature. So whenever Arundhati Roy publishes a new book, it’s a literary event for me!

“The pair of them lie panting together, curled like commas, naked in the nest they've rolled in the high golden grass. They've never done it outside before but today is different - today is their last day.”

I love a good opening (sentence) 😜. Happy fcf, everyone!

“Times are always strange. Art is always out of place. Always unnecessary when it's made. And later, when you look back, it's the only thing that mattered.”

There just aren’t enough gay novels exploring nonmonogamy out there! This would be the perfect pick for a naked bookclub meeting 😋

“We should go where our instinct takes us, if no harm is involved. Instinct is spiritual…”

Happy FCF, everyone! Only one to go, then I’ll be done with the Booker longlist!

I’m starting the week on a high. I may also be referring to the edible I will have later tonight. Despite everything, have a good week everyone!

I love translators so much
I see this Bashō poem around a lot, but it's always quoted leaving the last five syllables off -- which changes the whole poem. It's about the encroaching cold driving you into the comforts of the interior (the four-mat room). Kokoro no yoru is more like "yearn" or "be drawn to," not "have a dream"
