"The Catholics removed it."

Mariology is a thing, Terryl.

You know the second one and its meaning (absolution of sins and promise of eternal life after the Second Coming and the Last Judgement), right? The first one is all about shedding graces, interceding for sinners and protection from evil by Mary, who’s been bodily taken to Heaven.

Finally catching up on a month’s worth of theological articles and this one’s a banger. Mariology, even wonderfully well-intentioned Mariology, can get really dicey if Mary becomes representative in some way of God rather than of the Church.

How bad theology about God distorts our understanding of Mary
When we underemphasize the humanity of Christ or overemphasize the masculinity of God, other dimensions are pushed aside. Those repressed elements seek an outlet—and in the Catholic tradition, that ou...

oh yeah the orthodoxies are big mad about mariology it's the source of one of the first schisms in the church

yeah - and it's a very cool sounding term so it seems like it would stick to the sort of principal miracle of the whole thing, rather than being a very obscure bit of Mariology that has basically no larger implications afaict?

Very pleased to have had published -- in time for Christmas! -- my article on "Mariology, Mysticism and the Manger: the Christmas Crib in Bonaventure’s Theology" in the journal Archivum Franciscanum Historicum. /1

Which, curiously enough, is similar to Jung’s take on the whole mariology debate around the proclamation of her Ascension and coronation as Queen of Heaven at the time he wrote The Answer to Job.

Sunday is the Feast Day of St Ambrose Bishop of Milan (374-97)

Opponent of paganism and advocate of the Nicene Creed against the claims of Arianism.

Proponent of the Immaculate Conception. (Mariology)

Patron Saint of Beekeeper, Geese and Gingerbread makers.

Held to have baptised St Augustine.

As someone with a next-to-non-existent Mariology who had never directed any words towards a saint before, I asked St Mary to pray for me last night. … So, that’s how my life’s going. It didn’t feel as strange as my protestant brain thought it would. ⚓

This pretty much already exists as Lutheran Church Missouri Synod, but maybe these guys have an irrational hatred for Martin Luther or something like that. Or maybe they need the Mariology.
I'm a low-churcher, what do I know.
vance et al. thought they wanted to be catholics but what they really wanted to be was Evangelicals But With Aesthetics.
I think one of the things the US Catholic Bishops needs to recognize is that folks like Vance, Homan, Fuentes, etc. are trying to be an alternative magisterium to the Pope. The Catholic Church really needs to fight this before it fully takes hold.

SSPX would get a brain aneurysm from Augustine’s Mariology
Actually no. He insists Our Lady is Co-Redemptrix and Mediatrix of All Graces, upheld by popes before Vatican II and is already understood (it clearly is not). He then goes into how it attacks Thomism and promotes a Protestant spirit that drags Mary down to a mere disciple while threatening the IC

i have the highest possible mariology to be "decidedly protestant"

I have thoughts… this is both good, and yes, problematic. As a believer with about as high a Mariology as possible I will try to explain in a series of tweets…
Mary, mother of Jesus and all believers, is not co-redeemer, Vatican says
Pope Leo XIV approved the text Oct. 7 and ordered its publication, said the note, which was released Nov. 4. Cardinal Víctor Manuel Fernández, prefect of the doctrinal dicastery, presented the documen...

no, he didn't say mediatrix of all grace or co-redemptrix. But he picks up on St. Paul's framing of Christ as the New Adam and frames Mary as the New Eve. Which is foundational for pretty much all Mariology, even prior to Ephesus.

he didn’t assume an African or a Chinese body either — there’s no need to get trapped into bad mariology by a bad “metaphysics of gender”

I love that hymn because it smuggles in such incredibly high Mariology. The tune is such a bop that no one notices we just elevated Mary over all the hosts of heaven in glory.

NEW POST: Heaven’s Tiger Mum

How can understanding Mary as the most and least Asian of Mothers also help us understand some of the content of Mariology?
