you'll know when an alternative comes along that i'd consider viable when i release an official esmbot port for it
February 13, 2026 at 12:01 AM
@sammypanda i still feel quite iffy about fluxer, but parts of it seem intriguing; i just made an account since a friend circle i'm part of also decided to take a look

will i feel confident enough in it to port my software to it? we'll see
February 12, 2026 at 11:42 PM
people have ported it unofficially to matrix and revolt/stoat in the past, and there's probably more ports that i'm unaware of

i'm not involved with these ports, nor do i necessarily endorse them, but if people want to make them to fill the gaps in areas i don't really care for i'm fine with that
February 12, 2026 at 11:11 PM
probably worth noting that when i talk about releasing an official esmbot port for a chat platform, the "official" part is the big one there; esmbot is open source, and there shouldn't be too much stopping an unofficial port despite my thoughts on other platforms

go wild, just please give credit

@leo i think i did see those; for some assets it appears fine, but it seems like it could be a bit more complicated for others
February 11, 2026 at 6:21 PM
just added a progress checklist to the readme, there's a lot missing atm but hopefully it should be possible to theme all of it (though there are some parts that may be harder, e.g. window buttons in wine and textboxes)
February 11, 2026 at 5:47 PM
@kulupuSoweli this is true, there's lots of solid options for one-on-one communication

there isn't really anything as solid for communities/groups though
February 11, 2026 at 1:12 AM
@orpach.neocities.org i have tried stuff like luna and those vista-style themes in wine and they seemed to work surprisingly well

@sterophonick would probably require rebuilding the theme, the buttons/scrollbars and stuff are bitmaps with static colors
February 10, 2026 at 7:01 AM
should i push what i have to a repo somewhere (i've cleaned it up a bit but it's still a bit messy and unfinished)

i feel like the build system and structure of the project alone could help document how to make these things since there's not really much atm for that
February 10, 2026 at 6:47 AM
unfortunately i'm unsure if it's possible to change the outline design of textboxes, at least in wine...

(i have tried, but unfortunately didn't get anywhere)
February 10, 2026 at 5:52 AM
@kleadron.net windows xp and reactos, yes
February 10, 2026 at 5:40 AM
this was interesting to start on since there's barely any coherent documentation or tools for the windows xp msstyles format (aside from wine's own built-in light theme)

i ended up wrangling cmake and mingw-w64 to produce a working file, and adapted scripts used for the breeze gtk2 theme
February 10, 2026 at 5:39 AM
i know there have been a few registry tweaks going around to change the color scheme to look more like the breeze colors; this differs from those in that it's an actual .msstyles theme, which means i can do stuff like replace widget styles and offer multiple color schemes in a single file

@rexo this was the reason for my reply after this; federation may be used as a method, but it does not have to be the only possible one
February 9, 2026 at 7:57 PM
(this does not have to be through any one specific mechanism; any approach that improves resilience despite ownership or puts more power into the hands of users is fine in my book as long as it works well)
February 9, 2026 at 7:23 PM
one of my biggest worries is adversarial lock-in; this is a big issue with discord right now, and is part of why i don't see most clones (e.g. stoat, root, fluxer) as viable alternatives

i want to be able to trust that this won't happen, and just saying "we would never do this! ☺️" isn't enough
February 9, 2026 at 7:21 PM
if you're going to reply to this thread with some other software that you think could be a viable replacement for discord then i'd prefer that you actually have experience with using discord a decent amount

no, your 1-on-1 e2ee instant messenger or irc client does not meet the criteria

there is still no viable alternative to discord and you are kidding yourself if you say there is
