Luckily the tattoo doesn't read "THERE ARE NO FLAWS IN FEDERICI'S METHODOLOGY OR CONCLUSIONS". Right wing sources claim the commune's "petroleuses" would put place stamps with a maenad's head on a building with the initials BPB, or, bon pon brueler, which roughly translates as being "ready to burn".

The upper half of a maenad's head, from a Roman mosaic unearthed in the french town of Nîmes in 2007. She has beautiful blue and green hair, rosy cheeks and big wide eyes. This maenad's head is one of the motifs surrounding the centerpiece of the mosaic, which depicts the murder of Pentheus by his mother Agave.

#FrescoFriday brings us to #Pompeii via #Naples, where a #fresco shows us a pair of lovers untethered by gravity, lost in each other's gaze against a blue background. This recurring motif in Pompeian painting had a powerful effect on artists of the C19.
SATYR AND MAENAD, 62-79 CE. MUSEO ARCHEOLOGICO NAZIONALE DI NAPOLI This couple of mythological beings floats in the blue sky in a fresco from the House of the Dioscuri in Pompeii. Unbound to the earth, they exist in a little world of their own, as lovers do. Both figures are monochromes in a red that may have darkened to brown in the heat of the eruption, and only the Maenad's voluptuously exposed flesh is a pale yellowish pink. This is clearly a clothing-optional party. The satyr is nude and has the Maenad sitting on one of his knees, while she holds a drapery over her head which billows out at left like a sail, covering both of them. They share a loving gaze, his face upturned to hers. Of all the influences on C18-C19 art that Pompeian frescoes had, this idea of lovers floating against a monochrome background most captivated neoclassical painters.

A Victorian brooch made from small pieces of salmon pink coral carved into tiny roses, lilies, and leaves, as well as peaches and quinces. Victorian necklace made from salmon pink coral. There’s a centerpiece which may be a maenad’s head; it’s crowned with bunches of grapes and vine leaves. The ready of the necklace is a string of carved beads; they’re double-ended like a dumbbell, but the ends look like bell-shaped flowers. I mean, it’s Victorian, so who knows; they felt limits in design were for other people (unless they had a chance to slag on the Impressionists…)
