This #FrescoFriday we travel to the tomb of Gaius Vestorius Priscus, Pompeii.

This scene is part the inner west wall of the tomb and depicts gladiators squaring off. It seems reasonable to suppose this fresco captures a fight held in honour of the departed Gaius Vestorius Priscus.

This little bird survived a volcanic eruption!

Buried by volcanic ash from Mount Vesuvius in AD 79, this Roman fresco of a little bird pecking at fruit re-emerged looking as delightful as it did some 2,000 years ago!

For #frescofriday the extraordinary 'black room' from the imperial villa at Boscotrecase, dating to the end of the first century BC. It might look dark and gloomy now, but the walls would originally have been burnished to a glossy finish, filling the room with almost magical reflected candlelight.

These frescoes decorate a room in the house of Vigna Guidi, c. AD 130s. It was partly destroyed & buried, like the whole neighborhood adjacent to Porta Capena, to make way for the great complex of the Baths of Caracalla, built above it from 212 AD on.

Nicely characterised couple from medallion on a wall somewhere in #Pompeii.
Bare-chested man with woman who wears a powder-blue tunic + matching headband. Her hairstyle suggests Augustan date.

Costume suggestions for #FrescoFriday #Halloween from a #fresco from the #domus of the #Farnesina, 30-20 BCE: this odd pair of women in long chitons, one in front with a shield on her head topped with olive branches, and another taller woman behind, holding a menacing little saw. #AncientBluesky 🏺

#FrescoFriday gives us this #Pan holding a #thyrsus, a #Dionysiac symbol, in this #fresco fragment from the Evan Gorga collection now in #PalazzoAltemps. This is of possibly #Neronian date and is all about fun and revels, rather Saturnalian, with Pan wearing the crown of #Serapis.
