I think you can pin this lie on three things
1) Super Mario Bros 2 not released here because Howard Phillips thought it “was too hard for Americans”
2)Mega Man 2 Difficult Mode being the only difficulty in Japan
3)RPGs (FF4 dumbed down, Mystic Quest being made at all, etc)

Rewatching Marvels cause FF4 was just ok, and i forgot how much fun it is to watch Iman Vellani on screen and see Ms Marvel actually kicking ass with good choreography.

I've always wanted to go through the Final Fantasy games after getting more invested in the FF14 stuff and I'm finally getting to that.
I'm first playing FF4-6 and then going to FF8 and after that FF10 and FF13(and 13-2) since those interest me the most.

And I don't think that's even necessarily a bad thing? If every enemy in ff4's sylph cave shut off your capacity to do things it'd make the malboros much less distinct, for instance
And even less heavy-handed things like 'every enemy here uses fire attacks' is a bit boring and easily solved
