Court of Appeal just ruled Tower Hamlets DECISION to remove the Bethnal Green LTN is UNLAWFUL.

Councils can't remove without going through proper process & getting Mayor of London's approval.

This is a MASSIVE precedent for London. Years of work vindicated.

BBC London TV report on @saveoursaferstreets.org historic victory last night, stating that "LTNs have been hugely unpopular" whilst interviewing local residents who love them and failing to mention these LTNs received over two thirds approval in the original consultation.

Just casually cycling my Lime Bike through some really great Hackney infrastructure. @jonburkeuk.bsky.social assume this is something to do with you?

That filter was put in during my time, but you’re actually in Hackney’s oldest LTN - De Beauvoir - established 1973!

Looked up the name. Not going to give the address, but pretty sure they live quite close to a filter in the West Ham LTN in London.

Hannah Kirby of Headington Liveable Streets said, "[This would mean] three families every year not having to deal with the trauma of a road violence - that is why we want to see the LTN plan for the safety benefits of removing rat-run traffic from residential streets in Headington delivered.”

The main collision site within the LTN areas pre implementation was the junction of Rymers Lane with Cornwallis Road and Littlehay Road, with 10 casualties in the five pre-LTN years, two of them serious. Since the LTN there has not been a collision here.

A key local antiLTNer here furiously campaigned on the LTN cutting off services & then when they finally put a fire gate in, objected to the unfairness of council vehicles having keys. They are fools or disingenuous or both. Obviously the ideal is priority & efficient movement of essential services

Some of the problems we currently have in Hackney (Chatsworth LTN) are due to it being half an LTN which has pleased few & displaced traffic onto equally inappropriate roads. The 3rd way isn't necessarily better and the fact something is divisive & bitterly resented by some doesn't make it wrong.

To remove the LTN, Tower Hamlets will either have to appeal to the Supreme Court or agree to a new LIP with the Mayor of London that includes the removal of the LTN.

Urban high streets should have bus gates wherever possible; or surrender a lane to cycles and micromobility; Congestion pricing should be more widely applied; on street parking should be removed from urban town centers, etc etc etc.

unlike LTN opponents I have advocated for all of these things

The full Court of Appeal judgment is here:

Tower Hamlets cannot lawfully remove our LTN without Mayor of London's approval through a revised Local Implementation Plan.

A massive win for community power and safer streets across London.✊

So so so happy to have been part of this campaign to keep streets safe and healthy and not waste £2.5m of public funds ripping out a popular LTN. Thank you to everyone who has given their time and money to make this happen.

Tony just to reiterate two points. 1) The reason for the increases in this scheme which you quote, is because the council didn't complete it as it was paused when the new anti LTN mayor came in. So it isn't inherent in the scheme as planned just about bad installation. It is easily fixed.

In news that will shock HTN advocates, I just saw a DPD driver stop outside an LTN, walk though a modal filter and deliver a package 30m further on.
Can logistics satnavs be improved to deal with short walks?

There are some who say we don’t consult on our newest Low Traffic Neighbourhoods.

If that’s the case, it’s worth taking a look at the West Ham LTN engagement report.

John, people who say “where’s the consultation” just oppose the LTN and use demands for consultation as a smokescreen. You’d be better just doing it and saving the cost.

Looking at the data for the local half arsed LTN in Corstorphine shows 48% of HGVs speeding at the spot that one killed a man and his dog on the High Street. 86% further along on Ladywell Road.

10% are speeding up the narrow bit of Manse Road with 2ft wide pavements.

With the data being Oct 23
🚨 Shocking Stats on Speeding Near Edinburgh Schools! 🚨

I’ve been exploring this fascinating tool: speeding.hasp.ac.uk

It uses GPS data to show how often goods vehicles are speeding in Edinburgh (and beyond). The results? Honestly worrying.

Yes, evaporation doesn't just happen locally. My partner used the catalyst of our 2020 LTN to change from being a motorcyclist to an e-biker.

That evaporation happened across her entire commute, not just our LTN.

*** New blog post ***

An LTN in Islington will generate 1.4 million extra driven miles each year. Except that it's a non-story. Plus, I get to dig out an old thread because it's not the first time people have tried this "analysis".
