🧵 In "celebration" of the opening of the Silvertown Tunnel today, we recently took it upon ourselves to attempt the cross the river in East London by bike in (almost) every way possible.

@sirmichael.bsky.social Does this affect the list?
Ever wondered why there are no horses any more?

The Internet lies about slow cookers. Just had 7 hour roast lamb from one, browned in the outside, fell apart from the bone, delicious.
Cooked on high for two hours, added garlic, leeks, herbs and wine, then 5 hours on low.
No pre browning nonsense.

Is there a (German?) word for the feeling you get when you close the loft hatch perfectly with one push? No need to use the hook, and with no noise?

“In every city that I rode my bicycle in, you can tell whether it is a safe cycling City by the number of women riding their bicycles without helmets.”

I saw the above from a user called @bikesanantonio on the other place. And it fully made me stop and think about the places I’ve cycled.

Esther Road in Waltham Forest was subject to bad flooding in 2021.

Parking out, rain gardens in. Beautiful, urban cooling, mental health boosting, biodiverse, flood mitigating awesomeness.

“According to the finance ministry’s calculations, the cost to society of trips by car is close to one euro/km. On the other hand, every km travelled by bike yields societal gains of 60 euro cents thanks to the health benefits of cycling, transport efficiency gains, & lower infrastructure spending.”

Why is that Ben?

I'm glad you asked, for today is new tube or tomato puree day. So satisfying.

The King has come to visit Walthamstow, traffic disruption, local museum closed, and a huge crowd of about 14* well-wishers.
What is the point? How does the community benefit?

* Most were just passing a stopped out of curiosity.

Oxfordshire's road casualties are down 22.4% compared to just 3.1% in the wider South East!

We've gone 20mph across a huge amount of the county, which will have been a major contributing factor.

This is a huge policy success for the County Council IMO (1/2)

The London Overground line renaming is triggering a lot of the same responses that many other changes (e.g. cycle lanes) trigger. People with little understanding getting angry, and amplifying each other's anger. And getting even angrier when facts are explained.

In my job (Greenway maintenence) we've removed about 100 barriers in the past couple of years. A big objection was always that it would lead to more motorbikes on paths, but that has almost never been the case, instead it has lead to more people using paths.
