Rare Cancers Bill passes Second Reading
The Rare Cancers Bill, which is promoted by Edinburgh South West MP, Dr Scott Arthur, has passed its Second Reading in the House of Lords. The legislation is intended to tackle gaps in research, treatment development and access to clinical trials for people affected by this group of rare and less common cancers. Together these make up almost half of the diagnoses in the UK, but treatment can be limited and survival rates poor.

I’m supporting Less Survivable Cancers Awareness Week. New findings show these cancers receive just 19% of research funding despite causing 40% of all cancer related deaths. This imbalance is shocking and unacceptable.

This is a very serious situation at one of Edinburgh's best schools. I am pleased that the headteacher and Cllr James Dalgleish, as education convenor, are acting promptly to address it.

An official investigation has been launched after the Government's own finance rules were broke when a secret £175,000 pay-off was made to a “sacked” ferry boss.

This is how the SNP budget worked out yesterday:
1. Those earning up to £43,663 will pay less tax.
2. Cuts to Councils (bad news for pothole haters).
3. Marginal cut to housing... in a housing crisis.
4. Cuts to education & skills.
5. Cuts to support for veterans.

What would you have prioritised?

It's Less Survivable Cancers Awareness Week 2026.

@lesssurvivable.bsky.social is calling on the Government to finally tackle the shocking research gap holding back progress.

Consistent, sustained research is crucial. It's time to close the gap!

Bit minging this morning in the Calders Greenshoots garden but we made some progress. Just need a decent weather day now for installing the solar panels.

Yesterday in Parliament, several MPs raised the urgent need to fix our voting system.

I’ve been exploring this fascinating tool: speeding.hasp.ac.uk

It uses GPS data to show how often goods vehicles are speeding in Edinburgh (and beyond). The results? Honestly worrying.

My Rare Cancers Bill now has 19 peers lined up to speak in the 2nd Reading debate on Friday. The debate will be led by Baroness Elliott of Whitburn Bay, & Baroness Merron (Minister) will respond for the Government.

We welcome Minister @ashleydaltonmp.bsky.social remarks yesterday that less survivable cancers will be a key focus in the National Cancer Plan and that her department is considering #APPGonLessSurvivableCancers' inquiry recommendations. A positive step forward for these deadly cancers.

This is a growing problem. Edinburgh was promised funding to cut bus journey times, but the SNP Government withdrew the cash. The result is predictable: slower buses, longer queues, and even more gridlocked roads.
