If you're ever in Athens, go to the ancient cemetery of Kerameikos, in which you will find many happy turtles. Also amazing grave markers, and few tourists.

A funerary bull, Pentelic marble turned to ghostlight (c. 345–340 BC). Kerameikós still whispers: names fade, bones dissolve, but stone endures—solemn, unblinking. Eternity hides in the cracks, where silence devours memory whole.

Was looking forward to a visit to the Kerameikos last week contemplating the road to Piraeus & the Long Walls, but it's currently closed. Sigh.

Fascinating! Love the waving hand. The pillar grave markers are perhaps the simplest in the Kerameikos. There are slabs, some with relief carvings, entire family groups in deep relief, and fully 3 dimensional statues on some other graves.

Clicked on a YouTube trailer for "murder on Eridanos" because for some reason I thought it would be about a murder next to a stream in the Kerameikos and not a spaceship. I did think it was too good to be true...

More than 14,000 objects from @metmuseum.org added to Kerameikos.org, transformed from the CSV export on Github into #linkedart compliant CIDOC-CRM. Most of the objects are fragmentary, but some are intact vases, primarily Athenian in origin. kerameikos-project.blogspot.com/2025/09/more...

The Kerameikos, Athens, taken by William Woodhouse in the 1890s. The monument for Demetria and Pamphile was revealed during the 1870 excavations of the Archaeological Society at Athens under the direction of St. Koumanoudis, K.D. Mylonas, v. Stais & G. Oikonomou 🏺📜

Visited more today than I thought I would! Agora, Kerameikos, Acropolis, and Areopagus down. Now to feast at To steki tou ilia (I hope you haven't oversold the lamb chops @FlintDibble & @guerrist) and take it easy before the Acropolis and National Archaeological Museums tomorrow!

Any leads on detail photos of this guy (the Sacred Gate/Kerameikos kouros), in the Kerameikos Archaeological Museum (Athens)? I really want to see what the back of his hand looks like (pinkie finger visible?), a good profile, and close ups of mouth and fillet. Here's hoping!

Fabulous! If you don’t already have the whole trip planned out, try to stop at Kerameikos if you can. It was my favorite site when I was studying abroad in Athens and now it has a modern (small) museum on site too.
