A fragment of a B24 bomber known as the Daisy Mae attached to a stone in a new memorial for WWII in northern Germany. The memorial marks the crash site, in the adjacent cornfield, and was unvelied on 10 August 2025. #WW2

This problem does not only affect Pompeii. Many other well known sites in Europe suffer from too many visitors. The Acropolis in Athens, for example, is now restricted to 20,000 people a day.

A break from Roman sites in Bavaria to visit Dachau Concentration Camp Memorial. Having been to a number of such sites, this was the most harrowing, & still an experience I am processing. Why was this more harrowing than the others? Never again must be never again for everyone.

Spent the better part of the day exploring the Roman period of Augsburg. Known then as Augusta Vindelicorum, it was founded in 15 BC under Emperor Augustus - who is given pride of place on a fountain in the main town square.

On display in the Roman section of the Kelten-Römer Museum (Manching, Bavaria) are the remains of two military ships that were used to patrol the Danube River around 100 AD. They are said to be the best preserved Roman warships north of the Alps.

The *vast* Landesmuseum Württemberg (Old Castle, Stuttgart) is an amazing museum, with outstanding collections thoughtfully displayed. The display of Celtic archaeology is one of the finest in Europe, and include the artefacts from the exceptionally rich 'Prince's grave in Hochdorf'.

After a long drive to Stuttgart and a good night sleep, the first stop today was a great surprise. In the Old Castle is a memorial museum to Claus von Stauffenberg. He is the man who attempted to assassinated Hitler on 20 July in 1944 at the 'Wolf's Lair' bunker in Poland. 1/3

Spring is here in the northern Hemisphere - time for a historical and archaeological adventure! For the next ten days or so we will be exploring south central Germany. Starting in Stuttgart to see the new Celtic experience in the Baden Württemberg State Museum.
