Love the shape of this tenement close entrance on on Fotheringay Road on the Southside of Glasgow. Built in 1902, it was designed by H.E. Clifford, who also designed Pollokshields Burgh Hall, which I featured in my previous post.

Alexandra Elene MacLean Denny was born on 6 January 1947 at Nelson Hospital, Kingston Road, Merton Park, London, England. Sandy demonstrated an aptitude for music early in life, attending Coombe Girls’ School in New Maiden, where she also studied classical piano. Upon leaving school, she trained as a nurse at the Royal Brompton Hospital, then attended Kingston College of Art. It was during this time that she was introduced to fellow art student John Renbourn, who encouraged her to play folk clubs. Following a brief tenure with the Strawbs, with which she recorded the album “All Our Own Work,” Sandy joined the Fairport Convention in early May 1968. During her first stint with the band, she recorded three of their critically acclaimed albums, “What We Did on Our Holidays,” “Unhalfbricking,” and “Liege and Lief,” all three issued in 1969. Following her departure from Fairport Convention in mid-November 1969, she formed the short-lived group Fotheringay, which released one album in 1970 before dissolving early in 1971. >>> <<< Sandy embarked upon a solo career, recording four excellent solo albums: “The Northstar Grassman and the Ravens” (1971), “Sandy” (1972), “Like an Old Fashioned Waltz” (1974), and “Rendezvous” (1977). In late 1973, she rejoined Fairport Convention, where her husband, Trevor Lucas, was their vocalist and guitarist. Between September 1974 and April 1975, the group recorded their “Rising for the Moon” album, featuring many of Sandy’s finest compositions. When the album failed as their commercial breakthrough, Sandy and Trevor left Fairport Convention in late October 1975, intent on starting a family. Their daughter, Georgia Rose Lucas, was born in July of 1977. During a visit with her parents in March 1978, Sandy fell down a flight of stairs and hit her head on the concrete floor. Afterward, she complained of severe headaches. Following a similar incident at her home in Byfield, she fell into a coma, and four days later, on 21 April 1978, she passed away at Atkinson Morely Hospital, Wimbledon. Since her passing, Sandy’s recordings have gained respect among generations of admirers. Compilations of her work are issued regularly, as are a plethora of cover versions. So today, we honor Sandy Denny on her birthday and her contributions to Fairport Convention and beyond!

Thanks mum! In 1970 she went with my Uncle to the Fotheringay gig at the RFH where Nick Drake supported. Neither of them remembered, but going through my Uncle’s stuff (he told me he remembered seeing Nick Drake another time), turns out it was fig2 . What. A. Lineup

He died of a heart attack in his sleep on February 4, 1989, aged 45.

That's a great question! The history of protest chants is a murky, but the most prominent theory is that the protest chant was invented by accident in 1789 by Sir Fotheringay Chant when someone shoved a ferret down his trousers during a poetry recital.
