it requires time and effort and money to coordinate ILL requests, to pack books and ship them, and to process and keep track of loans.

and it requires mutual trust.

ILL is such an extraordinary example of the goodness of mutuality that I remain a little astonished that it exists.

How I feel about the whole Olivia Nuzzi story is that there are a lot of talented, ethical, underemployed or unemployed black and brown journalists right now who are ready to work.

ILL is critically important and this agency does so much more too, including policy research, special programs like the National Student Poets Program, Museums For All (free and reduced admission), grants to states and directly to libraries, museums, archives, zoos, arboretums, you name it.

2. Trump is probably getting all his news from Fox and AI videos and he is genuinely shocked that Mamdani doesn’t want crime and murder.

1. Trump has good political instincts and he knows Mamdani has juice right now and he does not.

ILL is simply the only way one can do scholarship in smaller fields at the vast majority of schools in the US. It was a lifeline for me at William & Mary, which has a great research library but little reason to acquire meaningful holdings in late imperial Chinese literature. This is amazing news!
I used to handle interlibrary loans for a public library. ILL is a magnificent expression of the idea that readers deserve books, and books deserve readers. It’s libraries everywhere pooling their resources for the benefit of everyone.

Killing IMLS could have killed ILL.

This is great news. 📚

my son in high school history had to create on poster board an amusement park, with four sub parks each dedicated to an area of the Reformation (Lutheranism, Calvinism, Catholicism, Anglican etc) and make up rides and snacks. It was clever and there was no way to use chat gpt

My private school has the "nuclear option" rule concerning using AI for assignments.

Get caught, you fail the year. And if you have any other disciplinary issues in your record, you're expelled, tuition surrendered.

Needless to say, we've never had to press that button. But it's there.

Waiting.

Finally, I know of at least one case where the letter writer, deep into an episode of AI-induced psychosis, asked the LLM why scientists were not responding. The machine suggested that perhaps the scientists were trying to steal his discovery.

This will get someone killed sooner or later.

It's believed we've lost the true name for bear in Germanic languages - "bear" roughly means "brown one," a euphemism used instead of the true name because it was believed that saying their true name would summon the bear.

Please do this! Libraries and librarians really really need your support. Because the dismantling of the Department of Education will impact us ALL
Libraries do so much for our communities and families and we'd like to give back!

Please take time this coming week to send an email or postcard of appreciation for your library to your superintendent, school board/city council, county commissioners court- or to librarians themselves!
