Nothing like going through a set of rare books and feeling a sudden wave of nausea when coming across this title. That phrase has been forever tainted.

My parents have spent the last 2 years as our church’s ambassadors to the EU and other dignitaries in the area, and as I have learned more about those serving in EU Parliament, I am not surprised in the slightest that Metsola made the right call.

(I condemn gun violence & the shooting of Kirk.)
European Parliament President Roberta Metsola rejected a bid by right-wing factions to hold a minute of silence today for slain US conservative influencer Charlie Kirk.

Right-wing lawmakers pushed for a tribute to the U.S. conservative influencer who was shot dead.

For all the times I’ve gotten texts from candidates and political parties, only once was I moved to action. It was a message from Martin Short.

When I clicked through to the message, it turned out to actually be from Martin Sheen, so I deleted it and went on with my day. But apparently, if you

Ms. Atwood is right about many things, including this.
I do legit forget that I'm an adult sometimes.

Kinda sad sometimes.

I still wanna think about what I want to be when I grow up.

We’ve reached the “building concentration camps and funding secret police to arrest enemies of the regime” phase of America fascism.

It would be super useful if the nominal opposition party would say that to the American people!

It’s not often that I think a video of Ted Cruz and Tucker Carlson is worth watching.
WATCH: “You’re a U.S. senator and you don’t know anything about the country you want to topple.”

We devote musicals, miniseries, and documentaries to the founders of our first republic and not to those of our second, who saw this country with clear eyes.

We need fewer encomiums for Jefferson, Madison, and Lafayette. More respect for Sumner, Stevens, Bingham and Douglass (Frederick).
Which founders? The founders of our second founding, those who drafted and ratified the 14th Amendment did.

That’s why they drafted Sec. 2 that would punish states that engaged in voter suppression and Sec. 3 that bars insurrectionists from serving in state or federal govt.
the founders never imagined a country destroyed by such a proud lack of public virtue

This is so delightful. Compassion is winning.
The Pope blowing off J.D. Vance gets so much more fun when you remember that less than a year ago he made time for this.

This is the sort of SCOTUS news I need. Better late than never, eh?
It is SO unusual for the Supreme Court to issue an order this late at night and honestly incredible only Thomas and Alito noted their dissents.

Also fascinating that SCOTUS rushed out the order before Alito could finish writing his dissent. That basically never happens! Again—majority seems pissed.

being an indie bookseller in the helltimes has felt both very stable and very stabilizing, and part of me wishes everyone could be on my side of the counter for a little while, because I think it would help some of you be a little less cynical and doomy right now. so here is my VERY anecdotal data:

In late-1855 to early-1856, during a fight over House Speaker, northern congressmen stood their ground & refused further concessions to the slave power. The gov halted for 2 months. It was the first sign of an organized antislavery congressional spine.

What Schumer did today is the exact opposite.
