Bluesky was generally better when we all more or less agreed to simply block dumb accounts and move on rather than quote dunk on them for clout.

Why MAGA doesn’t understand humor:

• Context is dismissed
• Satire is read as belief
• Bad faith is the default lens
• Punchlines are mistaken for positions
• Ambiguity feels threatening
• Laughter implies someone is “getting away with something”

Epstein redactions aren't believable, and they are valuable to fascists specifically because they aren't believable.

Fascists prefer lies to truth. Believing in a lie is preferable to believing a truth, if what you want is to dominate.

Believing lies dominates truth. So they believe lies.

Attacks on feminism are similar to attacks on vaccines. We begin to take for granted a world where women have rights and most children live to see adulthood, and then, over time, we begin to forget, neglect, and (now) reject the movements and innovations that brought us here.
Until the mid-1970’s, a man could not be convicted of rape in New York State based solely on the testimony of the woman he raped. A second witness was required because the female rape victim was deemed unreliable.

Feminism has not failed women.

Hold onto your outrage. It shows you have principles.
If we lose our outrage and accept this MAGA dictator crap, that’s what we’ll get more of.
So stay angry, but stay hydrated too. It's a long battle, and we can win it.

Once again; you can't moderate your way to neutralizing an issue like immigration.

It's fundamentally just racist reaction. Nothing is ever enough because what's demanded—ethnonationalist homogeneity—is completely unavailable in modern conditions. There will *always* be a basis for more demagoguery
YOU WANTED NET IMMIGRATION TO COME DOWN! THIS IS WHAT THAT LOOKS LIKE!

i just read something about grief from C.S. Lewis and his book, “A Grief Observed”

basically, when someone you love dies, it isn’t just them that you miss, but the parts of yourself that person brought out of you that can never be brought out again.

i feel that with my dad.

Yes. Trump and Greene are both odious but it is objectively good for them to fight, particularly over an issue that is extremely bad for Trump and which has zero downside for Democrats.

It is how the Framers envisioned checks and balances would work, "ambition must be made to counteract ambition."
People getting mad here about anyone saying it's good that MTG and Trump are fighting. I teach democratization every semester. The first slide says 'elite fracture.' That's always where it starts. It's good when people with bad politics are fighting one another.
I do not regret to inform you that we are going to win

MTG smells Trump's weakness. She can picture a world without him and she's making her moves.
Greene’s doing this for the same reason she was pandering to brainworms years ahead of when it became the GOP platform. She’s cynical but not actually stupid, and better than most at getting ahead of the curve. Knowing which way the wind is blowing. She’s placing her bets now for the post-Trump era.

The important thing is not whether the Trump performing sexual favors for Bill Clinton thing is true. The important thing is that we all pretend it’s true, and that someone asks Trump about it every day.

The people want a new, more modern political system which is designed to represent who we are and what we want.

A political system with more parties.
A political system without kings or oligarchs.
A political system that's controlled by normal people, not the billionaire few.

Our political system is fundamentally broken. It was not designed to represent the will of the people and it is incapable of doing so today.

The people don't want a king. The people don't want Democrats to surrender. The people don't want only two parties.

The people don't want any of this.

1. The Democrats won big last night. Here are nine thoughts.

ONE:

It’s a good thing when the Democrats win. There are some who would have you believe the opposite is true. As the New York Times Pitchbot said: “Zohran Mamdani won. So why does it feel like he lost.”

Another reminder: there is a roughly $6,000,000,000 reserve set aside for no other reason than to UNDERWRITE SNAP in the event of just such an emergency i.e. shutdown

So either GOP is refusing to access that money or Trump has already raided the bank to play golf

So much of the downfall of our democracy is going to be Democrats thinking wrongly that 1/6 was the end of something—rather than the beginning. They bent over backward to reinforce “norms” with Biden in office, but failed to prioritize legal measures to crush or stymie the rise of authoritarianism.
democrats preserving the fillibuster just for trump to direct republicans to get rid of it was for nothing. democrats should have done this day one in the biden administration but their biggest downfall was assuming that political “norms” were restored after biden won

Please note what happened here. By challenging Trump to pause his terror raids for Halloween, Pritzker forced Kristi Noem to come out *for* continuing to traumatize kids. Polarizing these debates draws attention/forces MAGA depravity into the light.

Have to admit I'm surprised by this result, and very ambivalent about it.

The downsides are that it means more suffering for Argentines, and because a win for any of these guys is a win for all of them, Trump included.

The upside is that Argentines would've suffered more if the Peronists had won.

This is normal post stroke follow up, sometimes on a 30 - 60 - 90 day schedule.

You get an MRI for post stroke because you’re measuring infarcted tissue, which is not evident on CT scan.

He’s exhibiting something called recrudescence, or a reemergence of symptoms after the initial stroke.
Reporter: Did you get an MRI?

Trump: I did. I got an MRI. It was perfect. Yeah…  nobody has given you reports like I have given you. The doctors said some of the best reports they have ever seen.

Update: here’s an excellent write-up on the topic by @stevevladeck.bsky.social. He reaches much the same conclusions I did above, in response to recent unhinged Miller statements.

bsky.app/profile/stev...
Today's "One First" explains why Stephen Miller is wrong that ICE officers have "federal immunity" from prosecution for all actions they take in their official duties, and that anyone attempting to prosecute them is committing a felony.

Supremacy Clause immunity is a thing, but it's *not* absolute:
186. When Can States Prosecute Federal Officers?
Stephen Miller claims that ICE officers have "immunity" for anything they do while enforcing immigration law. Even as an argument about *state* criminal prosecutions, that claim is overstated at best.

Given what Miller’s threat to arrest Pritzker for seditious conspiracy, I ask again:
Serious question: What's stopping the State of Illinois from arresting Stephen Miller & charging him with incitement?

The Senate didn't confirm him. He's just a guy.

At some point, the states MUST use their authority to prosecute, because the federal government certainly will not.
