I know we’re doing academic job discourse again. Less noted is that *we’re all just guessing* and it’s really hard to predict who will do well. It’s a crappy market shot through with terrible information asymmetries and straight up gaps.

The US. It was fun (sometimes) while it lasted.

If you have to do grading during the holiday I do recommend doing it bar side at an inn and pub you’re staying at in England.

Eric Adams is one of the oddest characters in American politics. You’ll read a normal article about Mamdani’s transition and then it’ll be like “the outgoing mayor says the house is full of ghosts”

Bust it open when you need stuff to get really really weird.
Mayor Adams has new walk-on music for a press conference at City Hall billed as an "end of term update" on his admin's initiatives. He pulls out a cigar from his jacket pocket. There's also an "Adams administration time capsule" on hand that'll be buried outside City Hall later.

“The everyone’s has to drink pee now bill is a DISTRACTION we’re focused on healthcare for all Americans!” Schumer probably
I hate that every week there's something stupid like an Everyone Has To Drink Pee Now Bill and the alert sounds to CALL YOUR REPRESENTATIVES THIS IS NOT A DRILL and you really wish you could just trust them to not go for the pee drinking bill

Pretty sure I just graded an essay responding to the prompt I wrote for this class two years ago. Not the one I wrote this year.

So….my old exam got passed around and they walked in and copy and pasted an old answer they got not even noticing it was a different question.

It’s always weird when students are cheating (near identical wrong things) but you have no idea how (not from class, not what ChatGPT says, in an in class essay).

Grading and googling hallucinated citations, as one does nowadays, and now that LLMs have been around for a while, I've discovered new horrors: hallucinated journals are now appearing in Google Scholar with dozens of citations bc so many people are citing these fake things

I’ll believe sports have the proper place in my university when I can email a coach to get students out of a game for an important test instead of vice versa.

Our future in the US (though we’re weaker on several of those)
The distinguishing pattern of Chile’s politics since 2010 has been voters voting against the incumbent party in every election despite the economy, political stability, rule of law, and social cohesion being pretty strong the whole time.

It’s a good reminder that if you’re brave and willing you’ll do it without a gun (this guy who tackled the Bondi shooter) and if you’re a coward you won’t no matter how many guns you have (Uvalde cops)

Still always in awe of how many apartments Canada builds compared to the US

In the most recent data, the US permitted 35k multifamily housing units and Canada permitted 24k despite being only 12% of the US population! If California built 5x as many apartments, it still would trail Canada!

Before I listened to Gavin Newsom's interview on Ezra Klein's podcast, I was convinced that man had no juice.

However after listening, I've changed my mind: That man has negative juice. He neutralizes the juice of others around him.

This ain’t your grandpappy’s south man. Came into my tiny neighborhood bar for a nightcap and it’s *packed* in here with lefties. Gay black men and grad students and uber drivers and lesbians organizing their chemical plants.

This can’t be good for the good ole boys nor the democratic machine.

Their high numbers on 'the border' and low numbers on 'immigration' suggest to me that a lot of Americans think that violent anti-immigration action can be confined to some imagined, depopulated 'other' place.
My somewhat dark take on the administration's tanking numbers on immigration is that voters mostly don't know what they want, they just know it's not what they have

I grew up pretty poor in a pretty rough place getting rougher thanks to opioids. I log on to Facebook like every 3 months and it's just absolutely packed with obituaries for people (mostly men) I went to high school with. It sucks. I want better things for people in this country.

The thing that’s funniest about this is that he’s describing the system that already exists.

Hospitals opting out (or shutting down) ✅
Expensive fees ✅
GP before specialist ✅
Insurance won’t cover things ✅
Rich people get a different level of care ✅

That’s already what we’ve got!

They then attacked a grandma & two kids, threatening to burn them alive if they didn’t leave their land.

She says the US hasn’t responded to her.
