when assholes lie about seeing SNAP scammers they ALWAYS talk about hair/nails/purses - racist and misogynistic to the core, & given as examples of women's vanity/frivolity as if intense societal pressure for women (esp. WOC) to maintain "professional" appearances in the workforce doesn't exist.
ROB SCHMITT: People are using SNAP benefits to get their nails done, to get their weaves and their hair. This is a really ugly program.

SEN. RON JOHNSON: That program needs to be dramatically reformed.

The first episode of X-MEN: EVOLUTION aired 25 years ago today. This show gave me definitive versions of some of these characters, at least one friendship that endures to this day, and all of the fannish feelings that my heart could stand at the time, for better or for worse. Probably both.

Too Good To Go is a great app for local grub on the cheap. We got 3 baker’s dozen of fresh bagels for $10
With SNAP/EBT cuts looming I highly recommend downloading this app! Basically restaurants and other food businesses will have available bags of random food they don’t wanna waste for ppl to buy for hella cheap! This has saved me sooooo many times when I only have $5 and need some food.

A fallacy that I see some organizers promote [sometimes] is that people 'just know what to do' and this is simply not true. Tell people what you are doing and invite them to join in.

Hello indigenous bluesky! I'm purging my bead stash that I haven't touched in decades. I have a TON of gorgeous seed beads & will happily send them to any of y'all for just shipping cost.
Feel free to share this far & wide. Happy to split things into a bunch of packages to send out.

Has your library banned Banned Books Week events/displays this year? I want to hear about it. I had thought I'd get 2-3 responses but, y'all, we're at over 20 at this point.

All anonymous. It will be used for a story in the near future. Survey closes 10/17.

"... the best advice I have to give is to ask: 'in what way is this argument founded in the premise that some people matter and other people don't?'"
Today I wrote about a general tendency to accept atrocious premises, and the need to reject fascism's false choices in order to find expansive and imaginative paths forward.

Breaking the premise, embracing the obstacles, pursing everything.

There Is No Trolley Problem
We actually aren't constrained into atrocious premises by thought exercises. Obstacles are a reason to fight, not an excuse to quit. Our friends and neighbors aren't distractions..

Neither Charles Xavier nor Magneto is completely right or completely wrong in their ideas or methods.
What's an opinion about X-Men that'll get you sent to jail? Is Jean really interesting or really boring? Should Logan have stayed dead? Do you think a certain x-mens outfit is positively horrendous even though people seem to love it?

The Brood Saga is better than Dark Phoenix imo 🤷

How to be an informed, pro-library, anti-book ban voter in upcoming fall elections (if you have them) and well into the future.

Don't just celebrate banned books. Don't just read banned books. VOTE to support the democratic institutions creating access to them.

Pet, Ace of Spaces, and Concrete Rose (along with its predecessor, The Hate You Give) were likely targeted for censorship for the same reasons that I loved them and think they're extremely important. #bannedbooksweek
Books by Black authors are being banned and challenged across America and the fight starts at home.
Show up at your local elections.

I was just thinking today about creating a similar display in my own library! This movie was a delight.
I love my local librarians so much, how awesome is this display they made in the teen section of the library, featuring books by Korean authors?
