Turns out that the #UHC shooter #Mangione comes from a very wealthy family that owns country clubs and healthcare facilities in Maryland. He went to the Ivy league school UPenn and has a cushy software job. His cousin is a representative in the Maryland state house. Not your typical class warrior.

It's really weird that the same people who are claiming that the rebels in #Syria are #AlQaeda (they're not) are also complaining about #Israel bombing regime weapons sites. Are you saying you want Al Qaeda to have ballistic missiles?

What's next for #Syria? Although #HTS led the northern offensive, #Damascus was captured by rebels of the #SouthernOperationsRoom, whose allegiance to HTS is unclear, along with the US-backed #SyrianFreeArmy. Any agreement on an interim government should include at least these parties.

I have closely followed this war for a decade and it's very surreal to watch this all go down within 2 weeks after years of absolutely nothing happening. "Who must go?" It seems like it's finally time. I think the most relieving thing is that so far, it has gone down without much bloodshed.

Bashar Lakkis The Syrian tragedy stems from the regime's original sin in 2011: failing to recognize the revolution as a legitimate outcry against decades of societal frustration and developmental failure. Rather than addressing the despair wrought by mismanagement, the regime cloaked its repression in a "policing narrative", framing the uprising as a conspiracy. This deliberate denial of reality plunged Syria into a cycle of unrelenting violence, exacerbating the grievances of a population long battered by failed governance and the absence of a sustainable political solution. Long before the revolution, Syrians endured the collapse of critical sectors such as education, healthcare, and social security. Despite the propaganda romanticizing free public services, privatization policies from the 1990s had already gutted these systems. More devastatingly, the erosion of dignity became an enduring burden for Syrians, leaving one to ask: how did they tolerate such indignities for so long? The regime exploited sectarian fears and militarised the conflict, leveraging the opposition's failures to deepen divisions. Opposition factions offered naive slogans like "no security apparatus or prisons", without presenting a vision for addressing the identity fears of minorities. Meanwhile, extremist rhetoric-such as "Shiites to coffins, Christians to Beirut"-amplified the regime's ability to rally minority support and justify its brutality. Syria spiraled into an all-encompassing war, with massacres committed by all sides, leaving over half a million dead and more than 8 million displaced. Instead of solutions, hysteria took hold: some envisioned apocalyptic battles like Qarqeesea, while others awaited the green banners in the Umayyad Mosque. Syrians were left to wander through an unprecedented spectacle of chaos and despair. Responsibility for this devastation remains evaded. Both sides shift blame, refusing to confront the root cause: the systematic exclusion of political participation over decades, coupled with the deliberate dismantling of channels for organic and constructive political engagement. This vacuum allowed radical ideologies and divisive narratives to dominate since at least 1958. If there is a way forward, it lies in confronting fears, fostering dialogue, and dismantling the mechanisms that keep Syria bleeding. The question remains: Can Syria's entrenched tragedy ever find a resolution? One fears that time has passed, as Aleppo and Damascus continue to offer endless tragic lessons—lessons no one seems willing to learn.
