The Republic that is collapsing now is the Second Republic. The First Republic collapsed in the Civil War; the Reconstruction Amendments were needed to found the Second Republic. That is failing now. To recover the United States from the current collapse will require changes to the Constitution.

This whole thread
We have a govt that’s engaged in human trafficking, that’s openly allowing a gulf petrostate to bribe its leadership, that’s reshaping the refugee program in overtly racist terms, that’s almost ended American foreign aid entirely, that’s doing its level best to crash the economy from the rose garden

There appear to be at least three separately operating heel factions breaking things within the government in wholly different ways right now. There's the Miller-headed immigration one, the DOGE/Elon one, and a Project 2025 OMB one. This dynamic hasn't showed up in mainstream reporting at all.

This thread is the definition of malicious compliance AND proof that librarians are legit badasses.
When the Patriot Act was passed, libraries got requests for patrons’ borrowing history. We were prohibited from disclosing those requests.

We deleted and shredded those records and stopped tracking reading history for that reason.

In payment, I'd like to boil the world's oceans dry, & steal all literature. For some reason, my head is not on a spike

The important thing to keep in mind when assessing Mark Zuckerberg is that at the end of the day, he will always be a snotty rich kid who has never been held accountable for anything in his life and he isn’t going to start now. Even when he becomes an old man.

Others have noted it but I will too: The big reason Bluesky is so hot right now is that the people who add value to social media - the frequent posters in specific fields - are here now, talking to each other and creating the "spectator value" that draws users and attention.

“Dont like Elon”

I’m leaving because Elon doesn’t like reason, fact based inquiry, science, democracy, fair play, and most of all because he is behaving in the same tradition as dictatorial leaders
“Leaving X because you don’t like Elon is the kind of purity politics that landed Democrats in this mess to begin with.”

I must say this as clearly as possible: if you have, in the last ten years, thought "I just don't get tech" or that you're "getting old" or "you're not technical," you are the victim - so much of the tech industry is now oriented around making you do stuff rather than doing stuff for you.
I was seriously relieved when I started listening to your podcast and realized my increasing levels of frustration with modern tech are not because I'm getting older (I'm only 40 for gods's sake!) but because everything is actively getting worse. 🫠

Right-wingers are social parasites - they feed on healthy liberal hosts. Without liberals to hate and troll they have nothing and the platforms fail. They made Twitter a sick, toxic place - and Twitter is dying - that's why they attempt to infect #Bluesky. Block them at first sight - no mercy!

you are not wildly outnumbered, you are not powerless, you are not in a different country than you were in last month, you are being DDOSed by organized bad actors.

We will fight tooth and nail where we can but also laughing at them and calling them weirdos is their worst nightmare because they know it’s true.
Congratulations to everybody on surviving the last week. It was fucking horrible but we did it.

We have to find little rays of joy and silly stuff we just have to. And we will!
