What makes my heart sing? Cats. Wild places, birds, butterflies, bees, wild flowers... long walks in the woods and by the sea... the moon and the stars… Archaeology, art, folklore, crafts. Peace. 🇺🇦 🌻

The theme for #BirdoftheDay is #HeadShots
And what a beautiful head the Fieldfare possesses - often seen from afar, the colour tone of the blue is exquisite when seen close up.

A cute little butterball, the Winter Wren. They like to bounce around in the undergrowth but will pop up to a branch to take a look around before popping back down and out of sight.

Herald of Spring on a November Day
Lovely to see the male catkins of the Hazel in the bright sunshine of this November afternoon.
Of course, the clusters of male flowers on the catkins won't begin to shed pollen until the late winter/early spring.

Goldfinches feeding on Teasel heads at sunset.
You had admired the teasels with their heads of purple haze flowers in June & there they still are at the start of winter.
A larder of seeds for the charms.

My granddaughter Arrietty’s Nature Journal. She comes once a week for nature studies (home ed). This week we learned about Jays, & their roles in spreading Oak trees. As chance would have it we saw (and heard) one close-up as it flew between the trees at our Allotment! @btobirds.bsky.social #birds

Some say the world will end in fire,
Some say in ice.
From what I’ve tasted of desire
I hold with those who favor fire.
But if it had to perish twice,
I think I know enough of hate
To say that for destruction ice
Is also great
And would suffice.

After the long flight to Dorset from Iceland, Scandinavia or Russia, Redwings are keen to get their plumage back to tiptop condition.
From tomorrow the 'north wind doth blow'. Insulation will be a key survival factor for these birds, through the cold wet nights ahead, in new surroundings.
