i avoid commenting on celebrity passings due to the parasociality of the thing but David Lynch was an artist’s artist and a reminder to never explain yourself (when you don’t want to). one of the greatest filmmakers to ever do it.

David Lynch gave us the language we needed to better articulate the indescribable strangeness of our shared reality. “Lynchian” is so overused because it’s a viscerally understandable word without any known synonyms. I can’t imagine a more beautiful artistic legacy than that.

If you’re planning on watching any Lynch, my advice is: don’t watch any analysis videos, don’t think about what stuff is “supposed” to mean, just get your own unique experience from it!!

I think people have become far too concerned with the “correct” interpretations of media. Just experience it!!!

I’m not sure there’s an easy solution to the lack of movie theater etiquette any longer so we might as well just have Stallone pop out of the screen like in Spy Kids 3D and just publicly shame the shit out of these people

“When Watershed in Bristol screened Edward Yang’s Yi Yi in one of its smaller auditoriums, hoping to sell 40 tickets, it sold 170 and had to move it to a bigger screen. The reason? Yi Yi had been recommended on Letterboxd, where it sat at No 11 on the Top 250…”

An outside-the-box pick for best picture, but the film of the year is Jane Schoenbrun’s I SAW THE TV GLOW, a meditation on dysphoria, repression, and representation that creates its own cinematic language, all neon-chalked streets, electrified static, and stifled metamorphic potential. It’s immense.

There are currently only 22 films streaming on Netflix made before 1980 and not a single one made before 1960, with the oldest film on the platform currently being PSYCHO. I know I’m a broken record but: buy physical media, support your local library, etc etc
