If I had explain American history in one sentence, I could do worse than "John Brown was hung for treason, but Robert E. Lee was not."
John Brown’s raid on Harpers Ferry began on this day in 1859.

Immigrants are a social good, anti-immigrant propaganda is basically all lies, and any approach to the "problem" that doesn't start form those two points is worthless

the real glory of world war two was that it involved a warrior cult being ground down and beaten to a pulp by people who would rather have been doing something else.
Hegseth: "Maximum lethality -- not tepid legality. Violent effect, not politically correct. We're gonna raise up warriors. Not just defenders."

"Getting rid of USAID is a very easy way of winning headlines... But if your one accomplishment in government is to rip funds away from the neediest, so that they can die, so they can be unmedicated, so that they can starve, that is a moral stain that I hope will haunt you 'til the day you die."

Absolutely right, and also applies on a national scale. We can stop the harms from continuing, maybe, but we can't erase the harms that have already been done, and they are staggering.
This person has been detained in shitty conditions for 6 and a half weeks, a month and a half, grabbed off the street with no warning. Imagine what that would do to your life, job, people who depend on you, your responsibilities and ongoing payments.
Do not forget the damage done to her.
Judge Sessions: I will just express my own observation that this is a woman totally committed to her academic career. Reaches out to other members of her community in a caring and compassionate way! No evidence of violence, no criminal record! She has done nothing other than attend her university.

It's the annual Ask a Manager salary survey! Every year, vastly fewer men fill this out than women. Men, please share your salary info (anonymously) so we have concrete salary comparisons to inform pay negotiations and fight the pay gap

@mattdpearce.com can you recommend a book or two on the history of labor in America? I know enough to know I don’t know enough and I am ashamed of my lack knowledge on the sacrifices made to get weekends and 8 hours days and no child labors, etc.

Schumer keeps talking about how the public needs to “rise up.” We live in a representative democracy, Chuck. We elected you with the understanding that you would be the first line of defense here, not the guy hanging out in the back waiting for the mob to storm the castle.
Schumer: "If he defies the Supreme Court, then we are in uncharted territory ... our entire democracy is at risk. I believe that if Donald Trump should defy the courts, the public will rise up. Democrats will fight it in every single way ... autocrats only succeed if the public lets them."

We shall postpone fighting on the beaches, we shall keep an eye on the landing grounds, we encourage everyone else, should the right circumstances come, to fight in the fields and in the streets, we shall eventually retreat to the hills; we shall never explicitly surrender.

I will never forget the photo of Zelenskyy’s face after he saw Russia’s war crimes in Bucha in 2022. He seemed to age years in an afternoon. Watching him constantly cross the world asking for aid that should have been thrown at him is one of the deepest shames of our age.

Even if “there’s nothing the Democrats can do” was true, I would still want them to fight everything, tooth and nail, as hard as they can for as long as they can.

There is honor in that. More than that, there is a signal that American democracy is worth fighting for.
There’s a certain enraging doomer quality to the “there’s nothing the Democrats can do” posts and attitudes

Fuck You, Make Me: leads by example, directs yelling at opposition instead of allies, easy to chant at a protest or put on a banner

How on earth do I read my Following feed in chronological order? Every time I open the Bluesky app I have to spend 10 minutes scrolling backward in time to where I last left off. It’s de facto set to reverse chronological order and destroying my brain.

The Syrian revolution and war and working on it for a short time 2014-2016 and following to before and after broke my spirit in a lot of ways and shattered my faith in most of humanity. But never shattered my faith in Syrians.

Privileged people generally experience the system as biased against and as singling them out for abuse, because they cannot imagine that’s just how the system treats people.
From what I understand from listening to @kenwhite.bsky.social Weinstein isn't getting any special treatment, and this is how it is for everyone at Rikers, but no, he thinks he's being picked on.
Lawyers say they suspect Harvey Weinstein has been deliberately mistreated in prison
According to Weinstein’s legal team, the disgraced movie producer has faced egregious conditions while jailed

I’m new to Bluesky and wondering how do I load more posts on my Following feed without being brought to the top of my feed? I’m trying to catch up on posts starting with the last time I checked it first and scrolling up to the newest; don’t want to read newest posts first.
