Dean Coombs still uses a rare, 105-year-old linotype machine to produce his weekly newspaper — circulation 380 — in south-central Colorado. “I’m not going to give up on this newspaper. I don’t know why. I’m not a person of change.”

Someone asked me once what white people could do right now to help.

I said make a group of white folks that have the sole purpose of clearing every Black, Brown and Native mutual aid effort they see.

Never heard from them again.

Smith (and Asa Carter's) central insight was that the best way to message American fascism, was to call oneself a Christian Patriot who hated Communism, and who was a brave and persecuted truth teller about the vast conspiracy in the media, education, and gov't that was about to destroy America.

Taps the sign:

THE LESSON FROM UNITE THE RIGHT IS NOT THAT NEO-NAZIS DIDN’T FACE ACCOUNTABILITY. IT’S THAT THE REST OF THE POLITICAL SYSTEM FAILED TO FOLLOW THE LEAD OF CHARLOTTESVILLE ORGANIZERS TO NEUTRALIZE THE REST OF THE NATIONAL FAR RIGHT.
This matters because when you misstate that UTR organizers went on to organize J6, it diminishes credibility and undermines the work and sacrifice that community organizers undertook specifically to ensure that the UTR organizers could never do such a thing again.

The thesis of the book is that early COVID lockdowns weren't worth it and mid-COVID mitigation measures like masks, contact tracing and business closures don't work.

This is laughably false and the authors have endorsed the people now running Trump's HHS.

Oh hey look, it's Sarah Ditum, a raging fucking transphobic bigot who has been a major player in the UK "gender critical" multi-year public campaign to manufacture consent for stripping trans people of their legal rights because she's a raging transphobic bigot!
Yeah, no thanks.

I can't overstate that this spate of articles is likely due to one wealthy, awful person and terrible parent commissioning a press release.

I see there’s a post about microplastics going around with a photo of drinking straws, so here is my semi-regular reminder that the 3 biggest sources of microplastics are tires (45%), synthetic clothing particles (35%) and paint (~10%).
Lay article attached:
One of the biggest microplastic pollution sources isn’t straws or grocery bags – it’s your tires
Every few years, the tires on your car wear thin and need to be replaced. But where does that lost tire material go? The answer, unfortunately, is often waterways, where the tiny microplastic particle...

Learning now that by opening a Waymo’s door as you walk past it you can take it out commission AND create $20 of profit for a gig worker. Sounds like a win-win
“Because riders and passersby can be unreliable, Waymo pays workers in Los Angeles $20 or more for rescuing a robotaxi by closing a door, summoning help through an app called Honk that is like an Uber for towing companies.”
When robot taxis get stuck, a secret army of humans comes to the rescue
Waymo robotaxis get stranded when a passenger leaves the door open. Tow truck operators can get paid $22 to close a door and set them free again.

I would love to see a practical book about how to improve our media literacy! There is a great kids’ book called KILLER UNDERWEAR INVASION that I use to teach my kids about identifying fake news, bias, and scams, but kids are not the only people who need this info! We could all use some help tbh.
Also: I've said it before, and I'll say it again:

Publishing, let me write a media literacy book, I am begging you. I keep being told that there's no appetite for this...

But how can there NOT be, when it's an urgent and pressing issue, especially with how we aggregate news + use of AI?
