What an incredible time completing #beaver surveys along the Lower San Pedro River with Watershed Management Group this weekend.

THIS - perennial flow and gorgeous #riparian desert habitat - is what is what we WILL lose if copper #mining comes to the San Pedro Valley.
Riparian habitats constitute only .04% of the Arizona landscape. Here the San Pedro flows, supported by a healthy canopy of willows and cottonwoods.

What a difference a week makes. We've added several more centimeters of ice and snow and the ice has shifted along the shore quite a bit. I still wouldn't walk on the lake, but we're getting there.
Looking out over Lake Winnipeg in the morning as the rising sun disappears behind low clouds. The ice is fresh and smooth and mostly snow-free and a few centimeters of snow cover the ground. Looking out from the same vantage point, but a bit further back on a clear sunny morning. There is much more snow on the ground and picnic table and the ice is covered in snow. There's also a ridge of ice along the shore where it's been pushed up by the wind in the last week.

I wasn’t fast enough to record it, because I couldn’t quite believe what I was watching. This Canada Jay swooped down to try and catch a vole who was making a break for it across the road. The little guy just barely made it. Today I learned that these guys will attack and catch small mammals #birds

This is one of the young great horned owls I saw over the summer.

It's lost most of its baby fluff, but it hasn't developed its "horns" (actually called plumicorns) yet.

I’ve seen plenty of downy/hairy woodpecker comparisons, and was able to craft one of my own! At the same suet feeder, at different times of the same day, this absolute downy unit (left) and this ABSOLUTE hairy unit (right) visited and showcased their difference in size/absolutivity. #birds
