This is the bright star Regulus (the tiny speck above the Moon) just after reappearing from behind the dark limb of the waning gibbous Moon. This was Feb. 2, 2026 when the Moon occulted Regulus, though from my location only the reappearance was visible. Details in the Alt Text.

M23 is an open cluster located about 2000 ly away in the constellation of Sagitarius.

The bright star to the upper right is a 6th magnitude star (about as dim as a star can get and still visible to the unaided eye) and is only 330ly away. #astronomy

February is Black History Month in Canada. It started yesterday, February 1. This shouldn't be your reminder that we have #BHM, but it might be and I'm going to help you out. 1/

Arctic comes from the Greek “arktikos,” meaning “the bear.” Most likely they were referring to the Great and Little Bear constellations in the northern sky. Antarctic literally means “opposite the bear” because those same constellations aren’t visible in the south.

Yesterday was the 40th anniversary of the Challenger Disaster. Many of us saw it live, and it became a moment that stood out in the memories of all who saw it. This tragic explosion brought on important safety changes that almost certainly saved lives in the future. May they never be forgotten.
40 years ago today, we lost seven heroes aboard Challenger. As an astronaut who commanded the space shuttle after this tragedy, I think about them often. Their courage pushed the boundaries of exploration. Today, we remember their sacrifice and the legacy they left behind.
