Ex-official explained this in a way that will stick with me forever: Within fire departments, the EMTs are overworked and underpaid and don’t have time to advocate for policy. The fire chiefs, on the other hand, have a lot more time on their hands. So fire response, not medical, dictates policy.

"To survive an enchanted world, an otherworld like the internet, we need the right kinds of stories to help us move through uncertainty and cross thresholds without losing ourselves."

You are in a maze of twisty little passages, all alike.
Neat perspective on the lure and possibilities of the online world: folklore may give good (and familiar!) advice on how to cope when dealing with Faërie.

Wow. This feels like one of the most important science stories I've read in a long time.

PPD is serious, life-altering stuff and the not-insignificant odds of developing it is something that weighs seriously in my own deliberations about having kids or not.
New research on postpartum depression shows it is not like other depressions biologically. It stems from dramatic changes in hormone levels that come with pregnancy and childbirth. A new drug, zuranolone, offsets that drop-off, and can do it within days. Read about how it works here:
Postpartum Depression Gets a New, Fast-Acting Fix in a Pill
Deep emotional distress after birth kills many mothers. A new kind of drug offers better, faster treatment

In the long history of American oligarchs and corporate heads kowtowing to foreign dictators, there's really never been anything like last week's state dinner honoring MBS.

The sheer number, the sheer amount of corporate power, was unlike anything before.

Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang and Salesforce CEO Marc Benioff were on the guest list.

This is the greatest part of the IT tragedy. Given root" access, one could enforce a publicly readable archive or central repository of all govt computer code, which could only improve transparency and, I'd argue, code quality.
Although DOGE occasionally pretended to modernize some computer system, the only non-vaporware changes to software they ever oversaw (mostly they didn't write the code themselves, just leaned on someone else to do so) were to remove "DEI" stuff from government websites

If I had a kid under 12 months old, and lived among the idiocracy, I'd be taking similar precautions as we took during Covid: mask them in public, limit their time in public, limit visitors, and increase ventilation.

Does the BBC think it's improper for a speaker to state their opinion that Donald Trump is the most openly corrupt president in American history?

Because I think almost all historians would readily agree that Donald Trump is the most openly corrupt president in American history.
BBC censors a lecture removing author’s remarks on Trump that refer to him a the most openly corrupt American president.

To be fair, by middle school the kids getting Cs and Ds start to realize school admins have slotted them onto the non-elite/votech track.
