Democracy is a process, not a static condition

Trump's mechanism to pay the troops during the shutdown is by far the most illegal budgetary action he's taken as POTUS, potentially setting the stage to break everything.

It's also needless because Congress would easily pass a troop pay bill if Johnson were willing to gavel in.

Long thread.

Good tread discussing how lots of right wing behavior isn’t based on facts or experience or logic, and yet liberals constantly give them cover by scrambling for some kind of rational explanation (one which frequently blames liberals themselves). Stop it.
I really enjoyed this @ezrakleinbot.bsky.social pod about Covid & MAHA, but one thing it repeatedly revealed is a habit of liberals that drives me crazy. A short 🧵.
MAHA Is a Bad Answer to a Good Question

DHS Secretary Kristi Noem says she supports the Trump admin suspending habeas corpus.

Habeas corpus refers to people's right to challenge their detention in court.

🧵 THREAD: A federal whistleblower just dropped one of the most disturbing cybersecurity disclosures I’ve ever read.

He's saying DOGE came in, data went out, and Russians started attempting logins with new valid DOGE passwords

Media's coverage wasn't detailed enough so I dug into his testimony:

It all matters but I think to maximize the impact of this, Dems need to tie this lawlessness to tariffs & DOGE.

You have an unconstrained leader acting like a king and usurping our democracy — & look at the results! To our safety net, our economy, our basic rights. Make the case it’s all connected

The Declaration of Independence lists 27 specific grievances against King George III, so I started highlighting the same offenses that Donald Trump has also committed.

So far I count 10 in whole & 4 in part, while Trump is threatening/planning several more (items 5, 9, 11, 15, 20, & 23).

Thoughts?

Not just the movements, but the actual policy goals as well.

Even if you elected a progressive majority to the House, Senate, and White House and they passed a bunch of progressive laws, the Trump court would just strike them down. Re-electing Trump has doomed progressive laws for 50-60 years.

Starting a new thread called: The oldest elected president in US history has lost his mind, and it's insane that the media isn't talking about it every day like it did with Joe Biden.

The US constitution was built to avoid centralized power and tyranny.

It is not the constitution that is failing us.

It is the partisans who have promised to uphold the constitution that are failing us.

It’s not the job of Democrats to save us from Trump’s destruction. They can’t

In our system the check on a destructive/criminal president is Congress and Democrats don’t control Congress. Until a good chunk of Republicans help, Dems can’t do anything

Start demanding Republicans do things, not Dems

A thread worth pondering. He’s right. If we’re the unstable element and willing to use our economic power to hurt allies at any moment… then it’s time for an economic divorce. And that’s gonna hurt the US long term and permanently.
There are two ways the international community can respond to Trump’s Colombia sanctions. The first is to keep their heads down and let Colombia weather it alone. The second is to realize that they are next and step up together.

I’m not optimistic, but maybe eventually they’ll figure it out.

Agree.

You don’t have to claim that she’s right on literally any other issue (she’s not). But if you’re not willing to recognize Republicans who stand up to fascism then no Republicans will stand up to fascism and fascism is going to win.

She’s a patriot. Wrong on lots of issues, but a patriot.
I’m supposed to have this tribal hatred of Liz Cheney despite her sacrificing her career to fight the one threat I care most about. And I’m supposed to have this tribal loyalty to leftists who continually refusal to do the absolute bare minimum and support a liberal Dem against that threat. Nah.

If you truly care about collegiate women's sports, instead of arguing about ~10 trans women competing in NCAA sports, go look at these huge issues & their consequences: NIL (name/image/likeness); employment lawsuits; online harassment (related to both NIL and gambling); conference restructuring.

A good rundown on how NIL deals might impact women’s sports in college. This is someone who is actually paying attention to the big issues in women’s collegiate sports rather than getting frantic about a few trans athletes.
NIL (name, image, likeness) stems from recent court decisions & allows college athletes to get compensated. It was conceived as a way for them to get commercial sponsorship (to appear in ads). But now, colleges are pooling $ from boosters to use to recruit and pay athletes. Great for some athletes.

I’m enjoying the MAGA v. DOGE fight as much as anyone. On the other hand, it’s kind of depressing that both sides in this dispute within the governing party of the U.S. are deplorable. Idiotic nativists and reprehensible eugenicists. Neither side believes in the principles of the Declaration.

In my first year of college, someone set a serious fire to my dorm house floor. I was told by the RA the cops wanted to talk to my downtown. I assumed they were doing this with all the students who lived on that part of the floor. So I went, completely idiotically oblivious…
If they keep asking you questions and you feel pressure to respond, you can keep saying “I invoke my rights to silence and to counsel.”

100% there are few people that make me roll my eyes harder. Taking Abramson seriously, is an instant unfollow as it demonstrates you can’t tell good takes from bad and whatever good take got me to follow you was an accident at best.
Seth Abramson is one of the worst Resistance Era peddlers of bad ideas backed up by no relevant expertise and should be relegated to the dustbin of cheap inexpert opinion givers. It was bad stuff in 2018 and demonstrably bad now applying a mere scintilla of hindsight.
