I am not a crazy ideologue. I just think that the richest society in human history has a moral responsibility to welcome the stranger, feed the hungry, treat the sick, and house the homeless. If doing that requires forcing comfortably-housed people to accept neighborhood change, I'm ok with that.
Probably the key part of this piece. It comes down to the following: "What does prioritizing millionaire homeowners’ aversion to change over the needs of the poor and unhoused do to our souls?"

If I can get a little too sincere: Tonight is the first time where I can believe with my whole heart that I can live in the place I love for the rest of my life, and live in the way I want to, and I am jubilant at the possibility. This is what politics is supposed to feel like.

Brad is a mensch! But more than that: so a guy who can't get his statehouse together to fund SEPTA has enough time to pop off on a municipal race in a city outside of his state... cool cool.

A+ priorities, Josh.

the NYC mayoral election might be an opportunity to reset some terms.

the Cuomo faction are not “liberals” but “centrists”.

the Lander faction are “liberals”

the Mamdani faction are “leftists”

if you’re mad at centrists but complaining about liberals you are mostly pissing on the wrong people

This is actually the fault of the Permanent Apportionment Act of 1929, which unconstitutionally capped the size of the House at the 435 seats determined by the 1910 census. We have a legislature based on the year California had 2.3M people. Both chambers have shifted power from people to land.
Statistically “America” is its cities. But we’re stuck with an 18th century political architecture that gives votes to cornfields & thus makes it politically viable to treat them as some kind of weird tumor.
not the main issue here but i'd really appreciate it if democratic politicians spoke out in support of big-city life and culture with the same energy and reverence that all politicians have for small towns

los angeles is "real america" and so are all the other big cities the president hates

This, & we're doing it again now, with a laser-focus on What Democrats Must Do rather than any pressure at all on GOP Senators & Reps who still refuse to hold the line. I see a lot of fuming at Schumer, Klobuchar, etc. It's all deserved. But where is the same fire directed at Tillis, Murkowski, etc?
Even if not true, they should have tried. And we are paying the price for their cowardice and all the other R elites who refused to pay the price and hold the line.
👇🎯 I will go to my grave believing that, if W & Mitt Romney weren't shameful cowards in October & had publicly & repeatedly endorsed Harris & told GOP voters that patriotism required making the hard choice, WI/MI/PA would have gone the other way, & we'd have been spared all of this nonsense.

I’m in the Village, it’s rush hour… & it’s quiet.

There are a couple not congestion tolling reasons (more cars have quieter engines these days, it’s the first Monday of the year so folks might not have gone into the office plus it snowed (which is also a sound damper)) but I’m struck by the peace.
