B&O 25 at the B&O Railway Museum (Please read the alt text)
On the night of February 23, 1863, President-Elect Abraham Lincoln arrived at President Street Station via the Philadelphia, Wilmington, and Baltimore Railroad. He was nearing the end of his journey by rail from Springfield, Illinois to the White House. The threat of assassination caused him to pass secretly through Baltimore City to Camden Station where a waiting train pulled by the B&O #25 took him safely to Washington, DC. B&O #25 was primarily a passenger engine, and thus carried thousands of troops across the B&O Railroad's main line that often ran unprotected between Union and Confederate forces. The route was a dangerous one, and some evidence suggests that the locomotive was derailed on several occasions by Confederate raiders.
