u heard sharon, everyone post about their esoteric interests right fucking now. for the good of the community, we need to be hyperfixationmaxxing.
i think this site really needs to figure out how to grow the non-politics verticals (the baseball moment was a good thing!) because i suspect a lot of the bad clusters come out of the political clusters driving 95% of ENG-lang posts
I'd be happy with big non politics accounts.

why do they call small things "fun-sized". this small pack of m&ms is less fun than a normal-sized pack. they should call big things fun-sized

LLMs are new. But they don’t create intrinsically new issues. They create old harms in new ways, and how we apportion responsibility for that doesn’t require magic, it requires staying true to the principles of why we have those laws and the theories of responsibility that our society operates on.

many people on here might benefit from
blocking 50-100,000 people. this site is still perfectly usable if you screen out 50-100,000 people. i cannot recommend highly enough blocking 50-100,000 people.

I'm tired of the argument that "it's hard" especially from companies with ridiculous access to resources. we have to do hard things all the time and society would halt if we just threw up our hands about it every time. and honestly this speaks to one of my larger issues with consumer tech 1/3
Or you could turn it off! Asbestos was more fucking useful and we just stopped! We repaired the fucking hole in the O-Zone IN MY LIFETIME. Unleaded gasoline is UN-leaded. There’s no more lead in it ffs! Enough with this “we can’t stop doing bad things” nonsense! Turn Grok off.

Not everything is a free speech issue. LLMs are just computer programs. Like a website or a database.

Look at it this way: if a hacker can trick your software into divulging credit card payment details, that's a data breach -- whether your software is an LLM or a website.

I wrote this ages ago about the finale of Mawaru Penguindrum (of all things) and didn't know the whole truth of it when I did, but whenever I feel powerless, or like I'm about to fall off of a dangerous precipice, I return to it.

burnt to a crisp handling things this week to the point I don't know if the holiday is even enough time to reset and then I have to make a huge road trip over the week so I won't even get to relax then. I can feel my desire to make rash/bad decisions rising in sync with the stress

This is an excellent summary of how "the author getting paid" works for traditional publishing! To which I'll add: it is super common for books (especially genre fiction) to not "earn out" the advance, so a lot of writers learn to not count on royalty money ever happening.
I'm going to do a little thread on how the money from books works for traditionally published authors because people have questions, and this is always useful info to share IMO. First, a big disclaimer that every contract is different, and there are a million factors that can change things. 1/

In remote Alaska, public radio stations like KYUK provide lifesaving information during natural disasters.

But Trump cut funds for public media, and that could mean deadly consequences for the rural community.

From our friends at @revealnews.org:

In remote Alaska, public radio station KYUK is crucial during natural disasters. Without federal funding, how will it survive?
