There is no greater joy than everyone in the house being asleep as you drink your morning coffee.
While my family visited China, they rode a high speed train that covered 1100kms in about 4 hours....😮💨
Worth noting that in their time there they could not believe how incredible the trains were and how much they (as regular non urbanist type people) so much preferred trains vs planes.

Related: my dad did find and step into his grandparents home in a small village in China last year. Pretty surreal moment for him.

China is starting to lead. We're falling behind.
This a big deal: "China’s carbon dioxide emissions have been flat or falling for 18 months"
China's economy has grown by ~5% in the last year, so this comprehensively debunks the idea (again) that emissions are tied to growth. So yes, faster progress needed, but this is how you turn the corner.

Still thinking about this part of the conversation, showing a poster by @tomflood.bsky.social next to two by Klaus Staeck that I remember from my childhood.
Lots of parallels between discussions in Germany (and other places in Europe) back then and Canada (and the US) 30 to 40 years later.

What if, and this is a truly out of the box thought, the new residents of this housing development become customers of those businesses? Customers who can...walk to shop from their nearby homes.

We really need to not let this happen
When Boris Johnson was Prime Minister one of his senior advisers confided to me that one of the only things in politics his boss actually cared about was “killing off the BBC”.
Five years on, and it is a campaign that appears to be finally coming to fruition.
