Pakistan: Bottom-Up Solar!

Analysts estimate ~15 GW was installed last year compared to peak electricity demand in the country of about 30 GW"

"The solar boom “has been very bottom up. It was...people forcing markets to import more solar panels.”

It's impossible to overstate how electricity is going to completely rewire the energy system.

The UK's useful energy in 2050 in a net-zero system will be 10% higher than in 2025, while it's primary energy use will decline by 33%. www.carbonbrief.org/ccc-reducing...

When I post about my heat pump & home electrification progress, someone will try to counter: “But individual actions are meaningless!” Unless of course if millions of Americans are doing the same thing. It turns out, they are. 🧪🔌💡☀️💨🔋

"Fossil fuels are losing their grip on EU energy. At the start of the European Green Deal in 2019, few thought the EU’s energy transition could be where it is today; wind and solar are pushing coal to the margins and forcing gas into structural decline"

Big new @ember-energy.org report on EU energy
European Electricity Review 2025 | Ember
The EU’s electricity transition continued at pace in 2024, as solar overtook coal for the first time and gas declined for the fifth year in a row.

And contrails are responsible for up to half the climate impact of flying. This is huge ⬇️
3️⃣ All flight planning must adapt flight paths and schedules to minimise contrails.

Just small changes to 1.7% of flights could reduce contrail impact by 60%. Robust data monitoring and collection will be crucial for informing these calculations.

NEW: 2024 has just been confirmed as the warmest year on record, and the first to breach the 1.5C threshold.

We used a ridgeline (Joy Division inspired) chart to visualise daily temperature anomalies since 1940.

2024 clearly stands out with 100% of its days above 1.3C and 75% above 1.5C.

The data is in. 2024 was the warmest year on record, and probably in the whole of human history – about 1.6°C warmer than the pre-industrial period.

More than 1 billion individual thermometer measurements, made by thousands of people over many decades, have been condensed into a single number.

Occasional reminder that there’s no, “it’s too late, its over” for anthropogenic climate change. Every molecule of CO2 that doesn’t go into the atmosphere makes a difference. Preventing 0.1 degree of warming makes a difference. Every bit of climate resilience we build together makes a difference.

We take for granted some of our society's greatest successes.
"There are not many places on earth where we have detailed cause-of-death data from before the era of widespread vaccination.

Massachusetts is one of those places.

From 1842-1877, 70% of all deaths were from diseases which we today have vaccines to prevent."

Worth sharing.....
