Lots of uncertainties, but Rory is clear that the only sure fire thing Canada can do to protect its oil industry if Venezuelan heavy oil replaces Canadian imports in the US is to build a pipeline to the Canadian west coast. Something Carney is already open to.
📺 Joined @cbcnews.ca last night to provide my view on what's happening in Venezuela, what will likely happen next—weeks, months, years—for the oil market, and what this might mean specifically for Canada's oil sector, which produces a similar, heavy sour grade of crude oil

this is an incorrect read of the situation.

it isn't "us domination of oil production" that has allowed crazy geopolitics in oil producing countries (without economic disaster) but rather a glut of supply and peaking demand thanks largely to the EV transition.

Trump Now Has His Very Own Oil Empire
Let’s do the math. Start with the oil production of the US and add Canada. Then include Venezuela and the rest of Latin America, from Mexico to Argentina and everywhere else in between: Brazil, Guyana...

The economic idiocy on display is pretty wild. Apparently Trump created a new oil empire where he has a new unique power.

"Washington would have the means to keep the oil price close to $50 a barrel"

Brilliant. None of the US oil industry makes money at that price. What a great option to have!

I am struggling with what might be a generational experience. The gulf war was pretty politically formative for me. It’s not history so much as memory this time.

It is destabilizing to see almost the exact same gameplan but this time without the guardrails that at the time I took for granted.

So, now what stops Turkey from taking over Syria, Russia from taking over Ukraine, and China from taking over Taiwan? US?

Technically, guano is renewable.
I mean, people have gone to war over anything and everything, including guano, aka bird shit, but renewables don't bring the geopolitical strife fossil fuel does.
