A bunch of us field leads were coming from our final shifts and waiting to get in and I was like “No spoilers, please!” I didn’t want to hear it from some random person outside among a few, I wanted to hear it inside the victory party with everybody! Grateful I got to experience that.

LOUIS, MO — This morning, the St. Louis Board of Aldermen passed a groundbreaking resolution, “Ensuring Ethical Investment of City Retirement Funds,” ensuring that city retirement investments align with St. Louis’s commitment to human rights, racial justice, and peace. Backed by the grassroots coalition Not Another Nickel, the resolution was sponsored by Alderman Rasheen Aldridge and co-sponsored by President Megan Green, Alderwoman Alisha Sonnier, and Alderman Shane Cohn. "There’s no question in my mind that I’m Indian. And there’s no question in my mind that I’m a New Yorker. And I’m all of these things, yet in each of these places I’ve been made to feel that it’s not actually my home to call– in Uganda, I’m told this guy is actually Indian, in India, I’m told this guy is actually Muslim, and in New York I’m everything but a New Yorker. But I’m realizing that it’s not a determination I should be outsourcing to others. It’s something that if I know and feel, then I need to become comfortable in asserting. Others will take time in catching up to that. It also helps to understand that if you’re part of any diaspora you have to live in multiple worlds at once, and have multiple sets of cultural references and histories–so that if you were to describe yourself in one singular term, it doesn’t really capture the different ways in which you think about the world."

The early line was so long at the main Astoria election results watch / victory party, around the corner, that there was concern of it becoming electioneering at the poll site on the adjoining street, so us canvassers had to be welcoming to celebrants but also strict about still needing to canvass

One immensely satisfying thing about today is that Elon Musk can crash out, Donald Trump can be pissed off, Michael Bloomberg can burn another $5 million dollars, and none of that will stop Zohran from becoming the next mayor of New York City.

I know, “I ain’t reading all that…” but this is me reflecting on the eve of an historic election, which is also 3 years *to the day* that I met @zohrankmamdani.bsky.social, about 6 weeks after I realized my lifelong dream of living in NYC. In short, I want my @socialists.nyc comrade to be our mayor!
Tomorrow night at this time, I should know if one of the first people I met in NYC after moving here 3 years ago, who: * greeted me as a new neighbor & comrade & wanted to take a picture with me, then gave me a shout-out in his speech that night * has offered me tea & food at events * de-escalated, as if a fellow marshal, a disturbed disruptor at a Tax the Rich rally he spoke at * sat by my side in 2023 in a policy discussion with the NYC-DSA Healthcare Working Group as a co-sponsor of the New York Health Act, then during lunch outside called me over to chat * dutifully represents me & thousands of my new community in the World’s Borough * welcomed & formally recognized the group of organizers I was part of into the legislative chamber in Albany during a #FixTheMTA lobby day * has taken risks with & gone on hunger strikes for bold legislation seeking to better the lives of the underserved & repressed * has served as an example of determination & compassion in organizing, from his role as an elected to putting his body on the line & facing arrest in supporting other movements * has stood up to fascist officials * has faced vile death threats & discrimination, ever-increasing & desperate attacks on his character * even with all that, will still greet me with a smile as a friend, fellow organizer, & neighbor in the People’s Republic of Astoria … will be elected as the (democratic socialist) mayor of the greatest city in the world. He will have achieved this because there are hundreds more like me who have been honored to even somewhat know him, a 100,000 more who have been inspired to volunteer, & millions more who believe he can deliver on his promises to provide the working class — in the wealthiest city in the wealthiest country in modern history — a life with greater security and dignity. I reflect on this not because I’m special but because I have had the opportunity through joining DSA. A better world truly is possible, and we can win it through organizing.
